Depending on whom you ask, profession could be defined in many different ways. The first approach to defining profession is from Catalano (2012), profession is, “A type of occupation that meets certain criteria that raise it to a level above that of an occupation” (p. 4). Catalano (2012) says that professions have a certain amount of power, have a code of ethics, and have a high intellectual level among many other things. The second approach to defining profession I found was from Morris Cogan. Cogan (1955) believes that there is no definition to profession. Respect to me is admiring someone for their abilities, qualities, or achievements. I think respect is always earned an can never be given. As soldiers soldiers we should always respect our peers because they have made the same sacrifice as us. But as soldiers we should have a higher level of respect for our NCOs because they have done their time an have earned it. Webster’s dictionary defines the word profession as a type of job that requires special education, training, or skill. Many Soldiers would not consider the Army as a profession but a way of life. Some think the word profession belongs to everyday jobs like a plumber, mechanic, or doctor. Dr. Don M. Snider stated “the Army is a profession because of the expert work it produces, because the people in the Army develop themselves to be professionals, and because the Army certifies them as such” (Snider, D. M. 2008). In October 2010, the Secretary of the Army directed the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) to lead an Army wide assessment of the state of the Army Profession. We have been at war as a Country for over a decade and the Army wanted to know how to shape the future of the Army as a profession and the effects the past decade had on our profession.

A profession according to the Profession of Arms white paper is defined by four factors and the Army has maintained its status as a profession when compared to civilian sector professions. The first factor is that the Army must have expert work that is not routine or repetitive. The second factor discusses a requirement for the Army to have years of study before one is capable of expert work. The third factor states that the Army must earn the trust of their clients through their ethics. The forth factor is the motivation of the Soldiers and Civilians through extrinsic factors. Using the four factors to quantify the Army as a profession in comparison with the civilian sector profession proves that the Army is truly a profession.
First it is important to identify what a profession is. A profession is a paid occupation which has involved extensive or prolonged training to equip individuals within the area with skills, knowledge and competencies which provide them with the expertise they need to support their organisations.
To be a good leader you must learn to take orders before you can ever hope to give them out. Every great leader in the military has been at some point in time the lowest or one of the lowest positions there is. That’s just how it is and for the ones who don’t understand that or think that they are above that will fail as the leader they should be. Taking and giving out orders isn’t just what a good leader should do, they should be a good listener as well. Listing to your subordinates is just something a good leader has to do to insure that everything moves smoothly and functions to the best it can.
Military service starts with recruiters announcing their intention to make a new man of every trainee. The modern military recognizes a duty to train military personnel to be both ethical and effective. The most common military characteristics often include integrity, honesty, courage, and loyalty. Surely, drill sergeants believe they can change personalities; but can they really or do they just scar the trainee for life?
The 56th proud history that included a very diverse and challenging deployment to Afghanistan has always seen success. During that deployment they have suffered some tremendous losses that have resulted in a chain of events that have negatively impacted this historic Brigade.
