What is a profession? First and foremost let’s look at how we can define a profession from a general point. A profession is an occupation requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation. Profession doesn’t mean only to be perfectly prepared on the basis of theoretical aspects, but to meet the strict criteria as well. A good professional should be a leader and leadership means solving problems. Leaders can be assessed according to the amount of resolved problems. Everybody has a tendency to be successful, in trying this; a successful leader has to be confident in his decisions. It follows from that, that generally we can consider the leader as an expert, a matured personality, somebody who meets the high moral values.
In the modern times, the profession of arms became similar to other professions such as lawyers, or economic experts. Preparation of professional soldiers is specialized on getting special knowledge and skills, which aren’t common in the civilian world and which can’t be gained by short training. It’s one of the features which set a long-ago warrior apart from a modern professional soldier. He becomes the expert in a very specific, socially required activity, which is, simply said, management of violence. The nature of the professional soldier’s training focuses on getting skills applicable in ensuring the safety of his country, which means monopolizing his profession.

It follows from that that military personnel must adhere to high standards of discipline. In most cases, observance of discipline is one of the basic prerequisites for the successful execution of the mission and order fulfillment.
Last of all, as you might have noticed from the above information the profession of arms certainly is a very demanding profession that requires engaging the whole person. The entire process of reaching the level of a professional isn’t an easy way in terms of armed forces. It requires determination, willpower, the right motivation, physical and psychological resiliency.

Webster’s dictionary defines the word profession as a type of job that requires special education, training, or skill. Many Soldiers would not consider the Army as a profession but a way of life. Some think the word profession belongs to everyday jobs like a plumber, mechanic, or doctor. Dr. Don M. Snider stated “the Army is a profession because of the expert work it produces, because the people in the Army develop themselves to be professionals, and because the Army certifies them as such” (Snider, D. M. 2008). In October 2010, the Secretary of the Army directed the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) to lead an Army wide assessment of the state of the Army Profession. We have been at war as a Country for over a decade and the Army wanted to know how to shape the future of the Army as a profession and the effects the past decade had on our profession.
My two strengths in the profession of arms are direction and recognition. I am strong in giving directions because I am very detailed and specific in giving orders (KAI-theory). Giving good directions in relation to deliberate leadership will help in providing subordinates a well thought out plan to further develop them into future leaders. My methodical approach discovered in the Team Dimension Profile will also be a great benefit when trying to develop a step by step plan. When I provide directions for a task or plan I try not to assume people already know things especially if it is something new or haven't been discussed in awhile. I also give my subordinates the opportunity to ask questions and ensure they fully understand the task before exiting the conversation. I also believe it is important to recognize your people. Recognizing your people in relation to deliberate leadership will help to motivate and encourage subordinates in their journey as the strive to reach their goals. I have worked hard this past year to put my people in for awards and programs. Recognizing your people shows that you acknowledge and appreciate their contributions to the organization.

Self discipline in the military is where soldiers do the 4 rights without being told, even in the absence of the commander. Discipline is created within a unit by instilling a sense of confidence and responsibility in each individual. To strengthen discipline, senior leaders need to give praise to their subordinates, either individually or as a whole, for tasks done well. By doing this, it will accomplish every commanders goal of having a unit that functions well and builds a bond which binds together the team. Everything in life requires some sort of discipline. Whether it is hitting a baseball, learning to sew , playing a musical instrument, making good grades or brushing your teeth it all comes down to a matter of discipline.
“A vision without action is merely a dream.” (Kevin Gates) The Army Profession Model is a great vision but if we do not fixed the basics in our upbringing of Soldiers then it will only be a dream. Imagine a panoramic view of an early morning sunrise over a military base. The sun is starting to burn off the morning dew. Formations of soldiers are starting to pop into the picture. Each soldier is in uniform dress sharp and moving as a single unit. Some formations are double timing moving out. Everyone has a purpose and stepping off to get to his or her next obstacle of the day. All Non-commissioned officers are enforcing nothing less than exceeded standards. Soldiers are toe to line in formations for inspection. Senior Non-commissioned
