Space colonization - a civilizational responsibility
Human space colonization is quickly becoming one of the main goals and necessities for our species. Although many arguments can be made both in support and against colonization I will try to limit them to just a few basic assumptions.
Let us consider the fact that this planet has been subjected to five mass extinction events, although some may argue that the sixth is currently in process, and a mass of opportunities for them to happen again. Everything from an asteroid impact, gamma-ray bursts, plate tectonics, change of oxygen content, climate change or a plethora of other causes could kickoff another massive extinction event to happen again at any time. Taking into account that more than 90% of the species that used to live on this planet are extinct it would be extremely hubris to put all our eggs in one basket so to speak. …show more content…

Which brings us to the other big positive of space colonization. The economic impact of humanities stride to colonize other worlds could be incalculable. Opportunities and benefits of colonization are something that can not be accurately predicted. Just one example of possible advancement would be space mining. Estimations of the economic value of asteroids are in the range of quintillions of dollars worth of precious ores. For the best example of unexpected benefits of going to space, we don't have to look far. The knowledge gained from dealing with issues met while accomplishing goals of the Apollo program basically kick-started the informational age that we live
