I am strongly opposed to the idea of mandatory civil service for citizens who have graduated from high school. This is because mandatory civil service is a violation of our rights and also because young adults right out of high school have no experience and have a lot of other things to go out and pursue. Mandatory civil service may help out the country in some small ways but there are much better ways to instill the same effects into our nation. In fact, there will be almost no support from the citizens of the US because this idea goes against the principles that Americans fought for in the Cold War. Mandatory civil service will not advance our government but instead, undo the hard work done to create this successful government.

Even though this may be true, helping our nation at the cost of our moral values, and what we stand for is unacceptable. As Americans, we have fought for our rights several times and will not agree to involuntary servitude. Also, the amount that the extra service is helping us will be insignificant as the labor is forced and people can not be fired, so in turn nobody will be motivated to work hard. Without any incentive, risk, or motivation, the output of these high school graduates will be extremely low, yielding very little gain for the US. This is the same reason that communism failed and the same reason that mandatory service will be a failure as well. For instance, “Communism is often criticized for its inability to create a sustainable economic system where people have the incentive to perform efficiently and act ethically in their work.”(Chu 1) This quote shows that civil service does not create any reason to perform so mandatory civil service will fail and not use resources efficiently. In order to tackle the problem of helping out the nation the government can create new civil service jobs which will avoid the problem of lack of motivation because there will be competition for these jobs. In turn, these jobs will lower our unemployment rates and help our local communities out, which kills two birds with one
Lastly, graduation is a big part of anyone’s life, and disallowing it can be devastating, especially for a very small problem. If a student works countless hours getting straight A’s every year, they should not be denied graduation because they didn’t work service hours at their local laundromat. While it is great that citizens live under similar economic terms and are assured of the same paycheck every week, communism is not an environment that will allow businesses or people to flourish. On the opposite side of a Capitalist society, where businesses are able to skyrocket earnings, a Communist society affects businesses ability to grow. If each worker is given the same amount of money, this can affect their motivation to do things and go above and beyond. Everyone who earns the same amount of money for the same amount of work seems like a peaceful agreement and a proletariat paradise, but it does not always turn out that way. Unfortunately, communism can often lead to widespread corruption and sometimes encourages greed.

Whether one thinks that the ideas of communism are good or bad, by taking a look a today’s society, we can certainly see the affect The Communist Manifesto and other books of its kind have had. Karl Marx’s ideas have shaped many programs and organizations to attempt following along the lines of equality.
Though the rewards are pleasing to the ear, the path to obtaining the benefits of communism is a violent one. This strict governing idea was derived from Communist Manifesto, a book written by two German economists, Karl Marx and Fredrich Engels, who declare that many problems in society are caused by the unequal distribution of wealth. These two believe that “Communism deprives no man of the ability to appropriate the fruits of his labour. The only thing it deprives him of is the ability to enslave others by means of such appropriations.” To achieve the goal of happiness and prosperity for all, the lines that distinguish the differences between the rich and poor must be erased. Obviously, the rich will never voluntarily give up their goods or status; therefore the figureheads must force equality among the citizens. Communism places their citizens, whether they be the wealthy or the laborers, into working classes that specify their contribution to the government. With such balanced placement of the people, individuality is impossible for any single person to achieve.
Marx and Engels had a specific vision for what they wanted their communist government to be. If communism had remained unchanged in its original form, the corruption of the party may not have occurred, and the rest of the world could have learned valuable lessons from the communists. If communism had continued to be what Marx and Engels intended it to be, then communist governments may have been successful. Unfortunately, what they neglected to take into consideration was the greediness that would overcome society. When people become hungry for power, they can easily take advantage of a communist government and corrupt it, transforming it into a totalitarian government. In theory, communism works out well. But as shown in East Germany’s history, communism’s promise of full equality is unlikely, unless government corruption can be prevented.
First and foremost, a capitalist economic system motivates people by rewarding them for their skills and efforts that they put into their work (Deane). Promotions and pay raises are some examples of the rewards that people are able to receive if they put great effort into their work. However, if people exert average or small amounts of effort, chances are that the rewards that they receive will reflect on their lack of effort. The rewards that can be received inspire ambition and an avid desire in people to be successful. People will apply themselves and be determined to reach their highest potential in order to acquire great rewards. People who work hard to earn more money will typically cause them to experience a feeling of accomplishment and will often give them the means to for a higher standard of living (Burke). I didn’t realize that the social factor was actually a big deal. People that only have a high school degree are eight times more likely to depend on public assistance programs unlike college graduates. I think that not depending on public assistance is good. We do not need everyone living off of welfare. We need more people getting a college degree and wanting to work as well. “For every female high school student who goes on to attend college, society saves $48,600 over her lifetime. For every African-American male who goes on to finish college instead of dropping out of high school, society saves $294,000” (Top 10…). Since the female decided to attend college she is getting a better education and won’t be living on public assistance and the society saves a lot of money. If everyone went to college the society could save so much more money.
The removal of rewards adds idleness and inability to focus because the people have no motivation to work their hardest. They know that every night when they get home they will have the same amount of food to eat whether they work their hardest or barely at all. The essential nature of capitalism is social harmony through the pursuit of self-interest. Under capitalism, the individual's pursuit of his own economic self interest simultaneously benefits the economic self interest of all others.
More than two decades ago, President Nixon ended the military draft. Now a new and more menacing form of enlistment is threatening our school systems. This enlistment I am speaking of is that we are forcing "community service" to be a requirement for high school graduation.
In a democracy, money is the most dominant incentive. On the contrary, in a communist government, a person can work a million times harder than the person sitting next to him, and receive equal pay. This results in no incentive on the part of the worker whatsoever. When there is nothing to achieve by working harder, people become slothful, which does little good for a country’s economy. In most attempts, past and present, communism has failed economically, whereas democracies have a commendable success rate.

Volunteering: The great experience no one can afford to lose. Opposers say, mandatory community service can have several negative effects on students. “Community service hours are impressive additions to college applications and can provide a student with a great sense of accomplishment; however, the mandatory hours will have many negative consequences” (Cydney Hayes, 2012). Many students are barely even passing the regular school curriculum, and opposers believe that adding the additional load of mandatory service hours will discourage teens from even wanting to graduate. Also mandatory service is usually assigned by a court as punishment to delinquents. “In a small number of cases, community service is required by the court system as restitution for delinquent offenses” (Planty and Bozick, 2006).
