Arguments Against Factory Farming

Where does our meat come from so quickly and cheaply? Shouldn’t meat cost more? After all it does come from an animal we are taking its life from. This thought is incredibly valid, however the sad reality is that there is a completely legal process called Factory Farming that produces our meats that we think are healthy.

According the New Oxford American Dictionary, factory farming is, “a system of rearing livestock using intensive methods, by which poultry, pigs, or cattle are confined indoors under strictly controlled conditions.” To go more in depth to this definition, factory farming is when massive amounts of animals (some factory farming facilities can house up to 125,000 animals) are put under the same roof and are fed to be slaughtered. …show more content…

One problem is that the animals are in extreme confinement and they can barely move around. They have very little access to fresh air and they can catch illnesses very quickly because of the such close proximity to other animals experiencing the same things as them. Animals slaughtered during the process of factory farming are murdered cruelly and it is completely legal to kill the animals with no pain killers. Another issue with factory farming is that the immense amount of waste that is produced by the animals pollutes the air, water, and land, especially in rural communities. Because of this, there have been many cases of sickness for humans due to factory farming. Don’t be fooled that factory farming only affects the animals. They are treated very poorly and are fed so that they reach the market weight. Growing at such a rapid rate is tough on their bodies and can result in serious injuries for the birds. Male turkeys used in factory farming end up growing 3 times faster than male turkeys in the wild in only 4 months!, because they are fed so much. This abnormal growth rate leading to heavy body weight leads to a lot of leg issues (which can cause crippling for the birds), and it can cause multiple heart problems.
Male turkeys end up having very large breasts because of the way that they are bread. Because of this, they cannot naturally reproduce because they are unable to mount the female turkeys. So now, all reproduction of factory farmed turkeys is done by “artificial insemination” which is administered by humans. Turkeys have to be debeaked and have to have parts of their toes taken off because they are confined in such tight spaces, (they only have “2.5 to 4 square feet of space” between each other), that their beaks can injure one another damaging their skin. This worries producers so they have their beaks taken off. The turkeys get parts of their beaks and toes taken off, which is incredibly painful for them. Their beaks are very sensitive areas that contain a lot of nerves and when they get their beaks removed, they aren’t on any pain reliever or anesthetic. The turkeys toes are removed with surgical shears and
