I personally think that joke theft is a real and serious issue. Because a lot of people spend a lot of their time writing these jokes and I totally understand them being mad for getting their jokes stolen from them like that. I would at least want some recognition or something if someone was wanting to use a joke that I made, they could've at least done that. I also believe that you should be able to copy write a joke, if you have spent time on something you wouldn't really want other people just stealing it from you. My opinion on this situation is that it is really kind of childish, it's just a joke. It's one thing if they use the same joke as you one time, because that could just mean that they are thinking the same way as you and just happened to think of them same and maybe they both just thought of the same joke and it was just told in different ways. But when you have noticed them using the jokes that you make more than once or in this case in multiple episodes of his late night T.V. show. As humans living in a world where problems occur on a daily basis, we need entertainment to distract us from life's complications. One special type of entertainment, satirical material, is an exceptional way to be humorous while also bringing to light several social topics. Unfortunately, this category of humor usually involves an idea being criticized to the extent of possibly being offensive. A comedy skit done by the show "Saturday Night Live", for example, is a superb satirical piece that is seen as distasteful by some. It uses humor to not only entertain its viewers, but to also make an argument regarding current social issues, creating a prime representation of satire.
I suppose one aspect we can look at is whether or not a joke is ‘morally right’. But how can we assess this? Some people seem to believe that what determines whether a joke is morally right is its ‘effect’. All in all, plagiarism is bad and ethics are changed for the worse in the world today. It is time for the world to look at itself and see where its ethics are and if they are right or wrong. Humorists sometimes use their platform in order to send their arguments and/or messages across. Because they say things in a joking matter, they are able to touch upon a topic, which at times can be inappropriate or politically incorrect, and give their opinions and comments while they come out of the argument and the fight with minor scratches. Many subjects such as, sexual orientation and race, are just a few of the topics humorists talk about, which make them a vital function in society.
For some, the punchline to this joke falls flat. Others react with shock and disgust. Finding a listener who both understand the joke and thinks that it is funny is quite difficult, but immensely rewarding. Before explaining the format of the joke, or why anyone would find it funny, the requisite knowledge for understanding it needs to be explained.
I would definitely talk to the people that are running the contest and inform them of situation and the plagiarism that went on. I would then talk to the person that was doing the plagiarizing and let them know of my disapproval as well as let that person know that I had talked to the people running the contest and informed them of the situation. I think that a person with high emotional intelligence would have handled the situation as I did. A person with medium emotional intelligence would have probably done all of the same things but in more of a (“in your face”) confrontational way. A person with low emotional intelligence would have probably just confronted the person doing the plagiarizing in a violent and confrontational way.
Humor can be used like a sniper's gun, picking people off when they least expect it. When we use humor to hurt, we abuse the fundamental essence of this wonderful gift. We must teach our children the difference between what is funny and what is cruel. A joke is never humorous if it is at the expense of another.
