“More than 90 percent of the wildfires have been caused by human actions”(Gabriel Zacharias). The remaining 10 percent are started by lightning or lava. Wildfires can somewhat be good at times when burning and keeping the greenery down to build buildings or houses near. Though at times accidental wildfires can kill wildlife, kill people, burn homes and cause much more damage to anything the fire spreads to all from throwing a single cigarette. The government in brazil needs to get involved in this because they aren't enforcing strict enough laws for littering cigarettes and unattending campfires and this is happening way too often. The government needs to be stricter against this and enforce these laws so people will realize the consequences …show more content…
One way a wildfire can be caused is in camping. In many places, camping is a big thing. Almost anyone would want to spend time in the woods to enjoy the great outdoors. Sometimes fires are needed for various things during camping and they can start wildfires very easily if not put out properly and if they spark(NASA Earth Observatory). The government should create a system where people shouldn't be aloud to have a campfire unless they have a licence stating that they can make a campfire without any harm. Littering cigarettes is also a big issue too. Some people smoke while driving, biking or walking don't realize what would happen if you throw your cigarette . Sometimes the buds are not properly extinguished and thrown away. You never know where that bud will end up and start a fire. The government needs to be strict about this because you are capable of starting a fire and you are guilty of littering. The government should enforce a law against this that states that you would have to pay a major fine for this or even have some jail time because this could influence the person not to do it looking at the …show more content…
Preventing wildfires is something we must all learn about. Sometimes the very little careless acts can cost the city a lot and even lives can be lost. There are many ways you could prevent wildfires to make it a safer community. Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests in order to make the land available for other uses.Illegal logging plays a central role in the destruction of the Amazon. ”Between 60 and 80 percent of all logging in the Brazilian Amazon is estimated to be illegal.”(Greenpeace International). The loggers have a trade system where loggers enter the Amazon forest and illegally burn them and then sell the timber to the UK and other foreign markets.(Jonathan Watts) Sometimes when they burn trees down for land or for logging the fire can get outrageous and expand for miles. This has become a very severe deforestation issue. “An estimated 18 million acres of forest, which is roughly the size of the country of Panama, are lost each year.”(United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization). The government needs to take action and make illegal logging have a stricter punishment against it because this is causing severe deforestation problems in Brazil and the Amazon is getting alot smaller each
Thousands upon thousands of acres are lost in forest fires every year. We always hear about the dramatic losses caused by forest fires and are often concerned by them. There are so many horrible effects from fires and most of them affect so many people. Studies have shown that out of all of the different methods to decrease fire damage, prescribed burns are the most affective. Many people would argue that they are not as affective because they cause so many health problems. Although that is a very important view and may seem valid, those health issues are not as extreme as one might think. People should look at the majority of the benefits form prescribed burns and they will see how affective and important they are. Prevention is the key to society these days and is definitely an important factor in saving lives. If more lives can be saved as well as land and wildlife, prescribed burns may be the better way to go about forest fires. Although, prescribed burns are better for the environment in order to prevent drastic forest fires, severe damage to timber and extreme death of wildlife; some people feel it affects the health of a firefighter too much and it causes too many long term effects.
As a result of this fact, cigarette and other smoking equipment start around 2,500 fires a year in Australia. A study conducted by the NSW Fire and Rescue service found that on a 27-degree day, 4% of the trails where a lit cigarette was thrown into grass on the side of the road caught fire and needed fire fighters to extinguish the flames before they burned out of control. This study also found that cigarettes ignited hay in 33% of the cases after performing laboratory trails. After the results of this study had been published, Station officer Scott from FRNSW stated that there is definite potential for fires caused by dropped cigarette butts especially in bushfire season. He also stated that, “a careless act by one person may have dire consequences for other, including the fire fighters who risk their lives at fires.” This is a major reason why I strongly believe that smoking should be banned, as it can help contribute to cutting down the numbers of fires that Australia experienced. Furthermore, cigarette butts and toxins can prove a major havoc on Australia’s marine life. According to Clean up Australia, a site dedicated to conserving our environment, 95% of the litter found on beaches come from suburban streets through the stormwater system. As stated before, 7 billion cigarettes
Fire plays a huge role in natural forests. The let it burn policy allows natural fires to burn unless, they threaten people, property, or endangered species. This policy allows the years and years of kindling that has fallen and piled up on the forest floor to burn up in smaller fires, instead of having huge devastating fire like the ones that burning for months in 1910 and 1988. When the west was first settled, forests were thinned by lumber companies that logged the trees and burned the logging debris, and by ranchers looking to increase pasture land. The last herder coming out of the mountains would set a fire to ensure good forage for the next year.
Wildfires started as an annual and seasonal occurrence in the south western region of California since the early 1930’s in part because of the hot dry summers and the hot dry turbulent Santa Ana winds that blow in from the desert during the fall months. Now it has become a yearlong event (Mckay, 2010). These conditions greatly contribute to the “fire season” throughout this area. This set of circumstances in conjunction with downed power lines and humans that ignited fires took place in October of 2007. This led to a series of fires that burned more than 500,000 acres, destroyed 1,500 homes, killed 9, injured 85, and forced the successful evacuation of around 500,000 people out of harm’s way.
Prescribed fire is a controlled burn of an area done by a team of experienced or educated people in a grassland or forested area. This type of burn is intended to help the health of plant and animal species and restore them to their native state. When certain areas that need to be burned so often do not get burned, they can be a hazard to the ecosystem in which it presides. A forest can get over grown and thick which will create more fuel for a wildfire that can destroy a forest community. In grassland a controlled burn, or prescribed burn, can help eliminate invasive species that can take over grasslands that are harmful to the more desirable plants. This type of fire can be seen as harmful and a disaster by many people, but it has great benefits on the areas in which it is done.
Fires kill plants and trees leaving wildlife without homes and food. Large fires cause lots of smoke and air pollution.
Prescribed fires are a well debated topic. While many people support them because they "help prevent" more wildfires, and they are "controlled," I see from a different point of view. There's a reason most building don't allow smoking within a certain distance of the building. Many people don't like it and it can damage their health. Same thing with prescribed fires. They add more pollution to the air we breathe. I know a lot of people support these kinds of fires because the help control fuels, but there are other ways.
Human beings cause most wildfires, directly or indirectly. In the United States lightning, the only truly natural cause is responsible for less than 10% of all such fires. In the West, lightning is the primary cause, with smoking (cigarettes, matches, and such) the second most frequent. Combined they account for 50 to 75% of all wildfires. In the “13 southern states (Virginia to Texas) the primary cause is arson; this combined with smoking and debris burning makes up 75% of all wildfires” (Perry, 1994). The other causes of wildfires are machine use and campfires. Machine use includes railroads, logging, sawmills, and other operations using equip...
Historically, firefighters have been are our modern day first responders and are the most courageous and loyal people in today’s society. One issue buzzing around the media, however, is that fire departments are going over budget extinguishing wildfires. The definition of a wildfire is a large destructive fire that spreads quickly over woodland or brush. To put out any sort of fire, you need to take away any of the three components that fuel it, which include heat, oxygen, and fuel. What most civilians do not know is that most wildfires do have the potential to extinguish themselves, which saves money, health risks and resources. So why are firefighters still spending money to put wildfires out? Due to the overspending on limited natural resources and taxpayer’s money, the fire service should alter their approach on extinguishing naturally started fires, or wildfires.
The devastating effects of hunting are made worse by logging companies that “provide the physical and social infrastructure for this anarchic exploitation. They supply the roads, workers, and ammunition to carry out this growing un-policed commercial enterprise. In the case of the Brazilian Amazon, the building of major roads for loggers to enter inaccessible regions has caused major forest loss, which directly threatens primate populations.
...r it is arson, an uncontrolled camp fire, or a cigarette butt it doesn’t take much for humans to spark a disaster. Yet there is as well a few set by good old Mother Nature. On top of the effects on the earth as well as humans, there is only one thing we all can do and that is listen to our old pal Smokey the Bear when he says, “only you can prevent wildfire.”
Bell, K. (2013). Where there's smoke there's fire: Outdoor smoking bans and claims to public space. Contemporary Drug Problems, 40(1), 99-128.
The Forest fire is occurring very frequently nowadays, reasons for it are a heavy increase in global warming and an increase in temperature.
Other factors that contribute to natural bushfires are dry, hot climates with minimal rainfall, the availability of fuel and the presence of oxygen. Disposal of excess fuels in the forms of dried and or dead leaves or vegetation must be encouraged to reduce the chances of ignition by diminishing the medium for fires.
Wildfires are catastrophic disasters that destroy everything in their path. “A wildfire (also known as forest fire, grass fire, vegetation fire, etc) is an uncontrolled fire often occurring in wild land areas, but which can also consume houses or agricultural resources.” (Wildfire.) The causes of wildfires are mostly intentional, negligence or accidents and natural causes. Wildfires have three distinct phases: Initiation, propagation, and extinction. This phenomenon affects our ecosystem, such as air and earth. In addition, people who witness this kind of catastrophe in the lower cases they lose belongings as houses or cars, but they can also lose their lives. There are many campaigns that help prevent these phenomena, but they need the help of the entire community. It is very important take care of not cause an accident. Wildfire is a phenomenon very common on these days causing a terrible damage to our environment and we have to prevent its expansion through our help, cooperation and prudence...
