Should GMOs be labeled? In a society where health problems are rising as a result of our food intake, more and more people are being aware of what we eat. Recently, genetically modified foods (GMOs) have been a controversial topic in the food world. Various questions about GMOs have been raised, such as “Should we have them in our diet?” and “What are they?”. The World Health Organization (2014) defines GMOs as “organisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination.” Although GMOs carry a stigma, research has proven they are useful in some instances, such as for building resistance towards extreme weather , disease, and pests. However, these stigmas exist for a reason. Many concerns have been raised about the link between GMOs and health problems, such as allergies and even cancer. As a result of GMO labeling, foods with GMOs would rise in price because costs trickle down. (Chelsey Davis, 2015) If a company needs to spend more money on labeling, they will compensate for the monetary loss by charging more to the consumer, thus hurting the consumers wallet. This, like any other price increase, disproportionately harms the poor more than the rich. GMO labels have even been shown to mislead consumers to fear GMOs when in reality, they do not know much about them to begin with, according to an Oregon ballot measure. (Steve Strauss, October 2014) In fact, many studies linking GMOs to serious health problems such as allergies and cancer have not been conclusive, and more research must be done to see if GMOs play any part in the causation of these health problems. Furthermore, non-GMO products have always been available as an option to consumers if they do want to avoid GMOs. Placing GMO labels will not take away from the non-GMO
