Many studies have been done trying to condone whether or not changing an omnivorous diet to a plant based is a safe and beneficial substitute. The advantages to vegetarianism are well-known, and the disadvantages seem negligible, yet in most countries only a tiny portion of the populace are vegetarian or vegan; Why would anyone ignore the option to live longer and feel superior, both physically and ethically? Primarily, the opponents of vegetarianism disagree with it's strictures on scientific grounds. “But of course,” answer the vegetarians “their own muse, science, silences those claims without effort.” No, in fact; studies indicate vegetarians are much more at risk for deficiencies in calcium, iron, zinc, and B-vitamins. Although many devoted vegetarians take supplements to counteract these deficiencies, the eventual lethality of an iron deficiency-related anemia, for example, completely debunks many vegetarian's claims that no meat is somehow “more natural”—if normal humans can't survive unaided after eliminating part of their diet, it can only be concluded that part of their diet was essential. An even more serious symptom of vegetarian diet is calcium deficiency: calcium deficiency inhibits bone growth, even causing proactive weakening of bone structures, and eventually osteoporosis and death.
However, when it comes down to eating meat and choosing another lifestyles such as vegetarianism one is not better than the other. Many people do not realize that commercials that advertise good health are actually answering the question of whether or not eating meat is better than being a vegetarian or vice versa. Vegetarianism is a rising trend in the United States today, especially among teenagers. A poll taken by the National Restaurant Association in 1991 found that about 20% of the population looks for restaurants that offer meals for vegetarians. Even Jeff Juliano, the original Ronald McDonald, spokes-clown for McDonald's fast food restaurants, has switched to a vegetarian diet (Robbins). It would be ignorant to assume that this lifestyle, becoming increasingly popular among our youth, does not have its advantages.

Vegetarianism is the way you can achieve your goals of being healthy. A vegetarian is someone who does not consume meat in their diet and may cut out eggs and dairy products as well. One thing that I hope to accomplish by eliminating red meat from my diet is educating my friends and family about the benefits that eliminating red meat can bring. Besides the extensive environmental benefits, it is also a great health choice. Red meat is high in cholesterol, and is a contributing factor in obesity. While a burger or a steak may be delicious, I personally believe that it is a sacrifice that is well worth making to help our planet and our hearts. While this may be a difficult task, filled with many strange looks from friends when I tell them that I can’t enjoy that hearty steak, I believe that it will be worth it.
While many today still choose a vegetarian diet to take a stand against cruelty to animals, it is becoming more prevalent to make the switch to vegetarianism for good health. More and more people are becoming convinced that a vegetarian lifestyle is beneficial to good health and economic health as well. From the beginning, human culture is thought to have used farming and hunting to supply food for a diet that was heavily dependent on meat. In The Ethical Case for Carnivores, Leanid Josephus concluded that the choice to be vegetarian stems from forgetting that hunting and eating meat is really what it means to be human. Supposedly, according to Josephus, to be vegetarian means to lack confidence and strength (Josephus).
