William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, is a story about 12 schoolboys that are on a plane that gets shot down in the Pacific Ocean. When the plane crashed, the pilots were killed, leaving the boys stranded on an island with no adults. The boys maintain a human-like behavior in the first few days of being stranded by developing a system in which everyone would respond to a conch sound when it was time to come together. They also developed a task system in which everyone had a task to complete on the island, such as finding food and building huts to live in. Another character, Jack, is a rebellious and aggressive boy who dislikes not being in control of everything and everyone. Piggy is another main character of the novel that is described among the boys as pudgy, asthmatic, and intelligent. When the tribes split, Jack is voted to be the leader of one tribe while Ralph is voted for the other. As the separation begins, the reader may notice that Ralph’s tribe maintains a human-like behavior, whereas Jack’s tribe develops a savage behavior. Jack’s tribe begins the days by hunting one of the only animals on the island, pigs. Watching Jack hunt and kill the pigs with joy, Ralph notices a sense of insanity from Jack and his tribe. After killing the pigs, Jack and his tribe would imitate the way the pigs died and burst into laughter. One night, Jack invites Ralph and his tribe of boys to come eat the pig he killed earlier that day. That night at supper, the boys came together and ate without arguments. After eating, the boys start a conversation about the mysterious creature that has been seen many times around the island.
