Christian singer Ciara has drawn flak on social media after sharing a pastor’s sermon on marriage, with some accusing her of shaming single women and pressuring them into some kind of standard.

On Jan. 20, Ciara shared on Twitter a video of Pastor John Gray’s sermon on women who want to be married but are “walking in the spirit of ‘girlfriend.’” She also included her own caption in her post, saying women have to “#LevelUp. Don’t Settle,” The Daily Mail detailed.

Twitter users were quick to react to Ciara’s post, with one saying the message of Pastor Gray’s sermon forces women to live up to a certain standard expected for them. Another user called the message “toxic,” saying a woman’s value does not depend on either man or marriage.

She accused the singer of using her married status as a weapon against other who are not married.

Still, there were others who defended Ciara and said the singer was merely telling women not to settle for less.

Ciara later on posted an Instagram statement explaining her controversial post. She revealed that she made the wrong choices in her life previously because she wanted to be loved in a certain way before she found the perfect love in God.

“I was a single mom sitting at home, and I then realized that the perfect love I was looking for was how God loves me, how He wants me to be loved, and who He was calling me to be as a mom and a woman,” said Ciara on Instagram. “Thats when I realized married or not married ... I needed to love myself. #LevelUp.”
