8 September 2014 Some people may never have the opportunity to get a good job because the cost of college is too high. College tuition in today’s society is extremely expensive. Families may not be able to send their kids off to school because of the costs. Many loans are taken out that cannot be paid off due to lack of jobs and overly priced schooling. People everywhere around the United States are struggling during this “money hungry era.” Although the cost of college is high, the university also has a lot of expenses that need to be covered. It is not as easy to dream big as people did back then. People must be aware that the infrastructure and resources of the past are either gone, much more difficult to access, or in the process of being recreated to support the new ground-rules. Alot more work is required in this generation. Glenn Llopis from Forbes Blog claims, “Unlike the past, when all you needed was a college degree to increase your chances of achieving the dream – today much more is required for you to even be considered to earn the right to pursue the dream.” Sixty three percent of all job openings in 2018 will require all citizens to have at least a College Degree. The American Dream is about freedom and equality. But in this situation it’s about having the ability to achieve everything if one only works hard enough for it. One of the main reasons college seems unaffordable is because colleges have to raise the tuition to cover their own rising costs. Colleges raise tuition so they have more leeway to tailor financial aid packages to attract the most desirable students. College costs are still rising much faster than inflation, because what's being financed is rapidly expanding. For example, schools compete against each other by offering newer non-educational amenities such as building new gyms and recreational centers. Another reason is because teachers need to be paid. Many schools offer various types of scholarship funds based on the types of students they wish to attract. Those scholarships may be available for academics, athletics, and possibly other extracurricular activities that a particular school is interested in. Prices are rising. Applying to financial aid and scholarships may help lower ones cost dramatically, especially when multiple members of the same family are enrolled at the same time. Applying oneself to a local community college for two years will definitely help with financial problems. By doing so it allows a student to transfer to a university and completing their college courses and credits with almost only half the cost.
