As William James once stated, “The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” Currently, many college students have the belief that stress is inevitable and is considered as coming from second nature; therefore, in order for students to succeed through their academic journey, they have to experience stress. On the other hand, there is the notion that stress is harmful and affects your physical and mental health; however, according to Dr. Kelly McGonigal, a person’s belief or view on stress has less to do with the levels of stress in relation with death. In this case, she quotes a study that people who believed stress is harmful towards their health, had an increased risk of dying, and people who view stress as harmless had no increased risk of dying. As a solution to address and tackle this issue that almost every student experiences, I propose that practicing social networking and socially connecting with peers and students who share the same goal will be the best solution for students to address and lower high levels of stress. I believe that the first reason why social networks should be the best solution approached by college students to address this issue of stress is the fact that its supporters provide enough evidence on how effective social networks tackle this issue of stress. As an example, there is the academic journal, “Exploring Facets Of A Social Network To Explicate The Status Of Social Support And Its Effects On Stress" from the Intenational Journal, Social Behavior & Personality” by Lin Chia, who presents that the findings in her research conclude that students who have higher social interaction and support from other peer students experience less amounts of stress. However, the actual purpose of social networking is not the problem here. The problems are the methods and ways students are using in order to build their social networks and receive this moral support. Even though, our generation and current society is heavely dependent in technology, I believe tahat every individual dispose to actually benefit from the moral support that social networking provides, would choose to network instead of falling for this distractions. As a result, I think that students who care for their health and grades should use social networking to the extent of communicating and sharing files with their peers; they should avoid at all cost the distraction that these social media sites have to offer.
