Are Athletes Paid too Much? “ Professional sports are physically demanding and sometimes downright dangerous, says Doug Glanville, an ESPN analyst and former MLB outfielder. A serious injury can end a player's career he says, so athletes are paid fairly. First, not all players are paid the same amount of money. For example,the highest payed Cubs player in 2012 was paid 19 million dollars, and the lowest paid Cubs player only get 417,000 dollars. Not all sports have the same salaries, different sports are more dangerous than other sports so they are payed more money. For example, hockey is a VERY dangerous sport so the Hockey players get payed more money than the basketball players. In conclusion, not all athletes get paid the same amount
Isn't it amazing how one little controversial question can cause so much drama? Take the NCAA for instance. Within recent years the question of weather NCAA athletes should be paid or not has arisen and caused them some unwanted attention. Many coaches and sports enthusiast have been interviewed on their opinion. “Students are not professional athletes who are paid salaries and incentives for a career in sports. They are students receiving access to a college education through their participation in sports, for which they earn scholarships to pay tuition, fees, room and board, and other allowable expenses,” (Mitchell). “There has been major discussion recently if college athletes should or shouldn't be paid while they are in school. The first thing opponents say is, "They're already getting a scholarship! That is more than anybody else! Don't be greedy!”(Hartnett). These are just two men’s opinions, but no one needs to give his or her opinion any longer. The answer to this question is unmistakably clear. NCAA athletes do not need to be paid because they get to go to college for free, their living expenses are paid for, and there would not be a fair way to choose which teams are paid and which are not.
These are just some of the reasons why athletes are paid so much money. The controversy of athletes being overpaid dates back to 1922, when well-known baseball player George “Babe” Ruth received $50,000 within the first year of his career. Ruth’s extensive wealth was bolstered by dozens of endorsements (Saperecom). As it is shown in figure 1, in the Fortunate 50 Tiger Woods takes the number one spot for highest paid athlete.
Do athletes get overpaid? Is it fair that the average NFL player gets paid 1.9 million dollars a year while the average heart surgeon gets paid 533 thousand dollars annually? I think that professional athletes don’t get paid too much. There are multiple reasons that proves that their pay is not excessive. Their careers are short, they risk their body for our entertainment, and they motivate children.
This brings up the conversation of unfair compensation between athletes. If student-athletes were to be paid, there would be unfair pay for athletes throughout different sports. For example, football and basketball players for division 1 schools would be paid more than those who play volleyball, baseball, softball, etc. Unfair compensation would also be involved in the sport itself because those who start on a team would make more than those who are considered 2nd or 3rd string. This would bring havoc to Universities and the only way to make this work would be to pay every athlete in every sport the same
Imagine someone putting all their time and effort into a sport just to figure out someone is doing better than them because they cheated. Athletes work daily putting in as much effort as they can but some take the easy way and use PED’s. It is unfair to those athletes that actually try at the sport. First off it is unfair to other athletes that work hard for someone to cheat and use PED’s. Athletes do not think it is fair considering how much hard work they put into the sport they play.
The salary of professional athletes are always being debated on whether they make too much or it 's the right amount they should make. Some of the athletes do make millions and millions of dollars, but there is some that don 't. Anyways in order to make the millions first an athletes must make it to the professional level. For example in soccer only 1.4% of people actually make it to the professional level. So the rest of the people make it for other sports such as football, basketball, baseball, and others. To be considered a professional athlete you must be getting payed to play a sport. They will be playing for a league and even tournaments and get rewarded with more money if they win. This age of basketball featured greats such as Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, and Oscar Robinson. These gladiators, and those like them, battled repeatedly winning league championships, MVP’s, scoring titles, and other accolades. Then, the product of James Naismith moved into an era where the love continued, but money was added. Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkely, Reggie Miller and Tim Hardaway have become league “poster–boys” for commercials and shoe contracts. Each of them has continued the competitive fire’s burning while adding a flare of green. Today, the league seems to be completely entrenched in money. Multi–million dollar contracts, million dollar endorsements, and billion dollar television deals are the focus of the league now. Some criticize on the players for being so concerned about money while others argue the players should be compensated for their God given talents. These “some” are mostly owners’ of NBA franchises and the “others” are the players. There are some that petition that the players bring in the money, so they should receive it while others say that they are already compensated enough for a game. In this instance, the “some” are pro player fans and the “others” are allies of the owners. With the large amounts of money that pass through the hands of the owners of NBA franchises and the precedent that has been set by other professional athletic leagues, NBA players should receive substantial compensation for their services.
Are elite athletes/sports men or women being paid too much if not how are there high salaries justified, if so, why, and how could there money be put to better use?
Jamal Carnette is a writer for the Motley Fool, and gets his articles regularly posted on Time.com and in Time magazine, a well respected website. In his article for the Motley Fool, “Are NFL Players Overpaid”, he states that the players overall make 47% of the NFL’s revenue, which, “on a comparative basis, salaries eating up 47% of revenue doesn't seem out of the ballpark, and may even seem a little light. For comparison, education and health-care salaries can average above 50% of revenue” (Carnette). The prior quote combats the belief that athletes are overpaid, as many people like to compare salaries, not percent, while this accurately portrays the amounts athletes make. This also corroborates a previous statement that, relative to percentage of earnings, athletes are underpaid compared to their counterparts.
Today we are going to be talking about Athletes pay and why we think there should be salary caps on athletes. A Minnesota VIking player can make up to $99.6 million in a year. The salary cap for the athletes is about $126.3 million a year. For the chicago bears quarterback Jay Cutler has a 7 year contract to make $126 million. We could be paying our troops more for serving our country. In just two years only get paid $26,562 a year. Our Federal employees, as our president, supreme court , ext. have to pay the social security tax, when pro players don’t have too.
Professional athletes in all sport leagues have been involved in crime whether it was big or small. The frequently asked question is, “Are athletes being treated the same as regular people.” Professional athletes are like celebrities; they are well known around the world and have all types of fans. Even though they are professional athletes they are also regular people, and should be charged like a regular person. How bad the crime is should also dictate whether or not they should be allowed to play again.
They put their bodies in risk every time they step on the court or field. A athletes who career or life could be over in a split second. An athlete could have a very serious injury or even death in a matter of seconds. According to the Bureau of Labor Statics athletes and sport competitors suffer 2000 injuries out of 10,000 athletes and sport competitors. This statics means that two athlete or sport competitors will be injured out of 10 people, which is a scary thought because they could be serious injuries to.
The same money that is used to overpay athletes can be used to pay those in other important professions. Athletes are way overpaid for the profession
When addressing the value of entertainment, there is without a doubt, that we as a society value entertainment highly. But there is no reason that these athletes, who are here to merely entertain us, get paid higher wages than those that save our lives and teach us such as medical doctors and teachers. I find it ridiculous that players make millions of dollars a year, and yet demand more. The entertainment that these athletes provide is solely entertainment; it is not essential to the function or productivity of society. If I were to become a professional football player I would not complain about my salary for many reasons. I am playing the sport that I love and getting paid for it. The minimum wage for football is well over $100,000 a year, as is for many professional sports. These reasons by their lonesome are enough to warrant that the salary professional athletes are paid is suffice.
What comes to mind if someone mentions entertainer or an athlete? People think of their lavish lifestyle, and their salaries are excessive. Many say that athletes and entertainers live in a care free world by all the money they make and that their job isn’t that hard to do. Although some people say that people who contribute to the society don’t make money like entertainers and athletes do, because of all the extravagant amount of money they make, the consumers would have to pay more. I feel that entertainers and athletes should be making their high salaries because they put in hard work to get to that point, freely donate to charities, and society aids their high wages.
