Appearances are much more than how something simply looks. An appearance is how something is viewed in various facets, including the physical, intellectual, and emotional traits of the given person. There are also different points of view when discussing appearances. There are the appearances we give ourselves, and the appearances we give to others. Even though these appearances define who we are to the naked eye, they are almost never the complete truth. People characterize us based on what they see, and not necessarily who we actually are. In society, there are people who know, and there are people who think they know. Oftentimes, the people who think they know make themselves heard the greatest, and create the loudest noise. These people need to ensure they sound more educated than they really are, and they need to ensure everybody knows it. They like to pretend to be an expert, however, don’t have what it takes to become one. Take the cast of Pawn Stars, for example. Family members Rick, Corey, and Richard Harrison run a world-famous pawn shop in Las Vegas, televised in their TV program. This TV program, which airs on the History Channel, records random people bringing in their “rare” items to sell to the pawnbrokers. The owners always share their expertise and knowledge over every single item brought in, and negotiate a price-point. As believable as the show is, it is completely staged and scripted. The pawn shop is a replica of the real merchandise, and each “customer” is scripted and given an item to “sell”. There are few parts of the show that are authentic, however the viewers are led to believe that Rick, Corey, and Richard really are experts in many assorted subjects, or ultracrepidarians.
