I am writing this letter to appeal for the inclusion of music in the curriculum. Mr. Minister it is with great concern that I write this letter, as I see the state of our nation today and I believe that the introduction of music education in schools can benefit both the parents and their children. One of the major issues being faced today is that difficulties some children face in their cognitive development. This in turn negatively affects them emotionally, mentally and socially. When children are negatively affected socially, emotionally and mentally they tend to ‘act out’. They join gangs, try to prove their self-worth by doing things that are challenging or things that make them feel invincible, thus they take unnecessary risks and have a total disregard for human life as they themselves have no self-worth. Honorable Minister I believe that music can help us deal with this situation as music education has been seen to improve a child’s cognitive development. Spatial intelligence is the ability to perceive the world accurately and to form mental pictures of things, this allows the individuals to visualize various elements that go together. This type of intelligence allows advanced problem solving, such as multi step problems that they would face in working with computers. Students learn to think creatively, they are able to imagine various solutions to solve problems. Studies have also shown that students who are actively participating in music education achieves higher grades in schools. According to PBS, research has found that children are able to learn other subjects and skills that they will use in other areas. Music education enriches that children experiences of singing, listening and moving, this benefits children as they move into more formal learning (Mary Luehrisen, National Association of Music
