Russia is a transcontinental country spanning from the continents of Europe and Asia above the 50th parallel. It is the world’s largest country with an area of 6.602 million square miles, covering ⅛ of the world’s surface.
Population
As of 2013, Russia has a population of 143.5 million people.
Symbol of State
A Russian symbol is their coat of arms which was created in 1993. It has an eagle with two heads against with a red shield. The orb and scepter that is being hold by the eagles’ feet symbolizes sovereign power and authority, and the crowns on the eagle’s heads represent unity. Russia is also widely known for its many cathedrals that have different beautiful styles.

This weapon of mass destruction was heavily intimidating for the Soviet Union. The tension that arose between the two international superpowers led to what is known as the Cold War. The Cold War was not an actual war that used military forces and resources, it is a metaphorical war between the United States and the Soviet Union that was implemented through the arms race and the containment of communism. However, the spread of communism was inevitable in Korea and Vietnam, which led to U.S involvement. A couple years after the Korean War ends, Joseph Stalin dies in 1953, taking with him the infamous legacy of killing about 20 million people and going down in history as the most despicable totalitarian leader in history. Nonetheless, the Cold War continues with Nikita Khrushchev as leader of the USSR. The arms race continued with the development of many nuclear weapons as well as the space race. The Soviet Union launched the first satellite Sputnik to Orbit the earth, and the United States was the first to land men on the moon later in 1969. In October 1962 Khrushchev instigated the Cuban Missile Crisis during President John F. Kennedy’s Presidency, a thirteen day period where the USSR was told to remove their nuclear missiles from Cuba. Under this structure, there is a President and a Prime Minister as head of the state and government, but the President does hold more power, The current President of Russia is Vladimir Putin who was elected since 2012. Tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union had started since the early conference in World War Two and increased further at the War’s conclusion. These tensions developed further during the Berlin Blockade and Airlift during 1948 and 1949, China becoming communist in 1949, and the Korean War between 1950 and 1953. The events, have been labelled as the early crisis of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, and greatly increased tensions between the two superpowers and further led the countries into a Cold War.
Things began to roll when a US-based U2 sky plane took photos of some USSR intermediate ballistic missiles with the capability of transporting nuclear heads. The situation got worse when the USSR dispatched 42 medium range missiles and 24 other intermediate range missiles to the Cuban. After the United States threatened to attack Cuba, UUSR withdrew her weaponry. The Cold War gets to give a description of the US-USSR relationship during that phase. The Cold War intensified in the late 1940s and the early 1950s because of the hysteria that the US citizens developed.
In 1980, it seemed like the United States was not as dominant in the world as it had been before. The Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union began after World War II. The two nations had joined forces as members of the Allies, but tensions arose after the war. The Americans were very worried about the spread of Soviet communism, and tried to prevent it with a policy of containment, where the United States would protect countries from outside oppression. The Cold War also expanded to include the race between the Soviets and Americans to create atomic weapons. Furthermore, there was a race between the two countries to put the first man in space, which was accomplished by the United States in 1961 (“Cold War History”). The Soviet Union and the United States were very distant during three decades of a nuclear arms race. Even though the two nations never directly had a battle, the Cuban Missile Crisis, amongst other things, was a result of the tension. The missile crisis began in October of 1962, when an American spy plane secretly photographed nuclear missile sites being built by the Soviet Union in Cuba. JFK did not want the Soviet Union and Cuba to know that he had discovered the missiles, so he made his decisions very secretly. Eventually, Kennedy decided to place a ring of ships around Cuba and place missiles in Turkey. Eventually, both leaders superpowers realized the possibility of a nuclear war and agreed to a deal in which the Soviets would remove the missiles from Cuba if the US didn't invade Cuba. Even though the Soviets removed took their missiles out of Cuba and the US eventually taking their missiles out of Turkey, they (the Soviets) continued to build a more advanced military; the missile crisis was over, but the arms race was not.
A cold war is an ideological conflict with military standoffs while keeping diplomatic relations open. The Cold War consisted of two sides (or Superpowers); the first was the United States, who believed in and practiced capitalism, the opposing side was the Soviet Union, who believed in and practiced the idea of communism. Many historians dispute the start time of the conflict; however, it began some time after World War II and dragged on until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989. The Cold War Project Group Online claims “the advancement of technology during the Cold War was greater than that of any one time period” (“The Arms Race”). The war developed nuclear missiles and many other technological advancements taking the world into a new era, the Nuclear Era. It was estimated at one time the United States and the Soviet Union could nuke the world seven times over; the governments realized the pointlessness of so many nuclear missiles and turned their attention toward other ways to get an upper hand in the conflict. Tensions ran high during this time; without military confrontation, research and resources were redirected towards other fields of technology such as detection systems, surveillance equipment, and underwater technologies.
From past Olympics, we see that the Russians excel in sports and are powerful individuals. We also see the power and intelligence that comes from this country. Russia is a different country than most are used to, which has made a history for itself. Russia played a huge part in World War II as well as establishing many scientific minds and creation. The first mission (unmanned) to outer space was conducted by Russia (Soviet Union).
Russia is generally apportioned the benefit of having introduced a political phenomenon that basically provided an alternative for capitalism; communism. Since this concept was only set in motion at the turn of the 20th century, we can therefore deduce that, to a large extent, Russia is, to most people, synonymous with leaders such as Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchev, and Gorbachev. This supposition is entirely based on the premise that the Russian revolution of 1914 inherently altered the socio-cultural and socio-political direction of the nation, bringing into birth a never before envisioned era where Russia was not ruled by the Tsars, but by simple men; men who spoke to and articulated the needs of the masses. To this extent, communism, therefore, is largely misconceived as having been the fulcrum of Russia’s civilization. Much of this misconception , as signaled earlier, is based on the growth and progression of the Russian society in the years after the revolution until 1990, when the Berlin wall fell, essentially bringing down with it decades of Soviet Union tradition based on communism.
After WWII their relationship became even more tense due to the building of new weapons capable of destroying entire countries. The USA built and tested a new type of weapon called the Hydrogen Bomb. The Soviet Union became concerned as to whether the USA would actually use such a weapon. Because of this, the Soviet Union began designing a similar weapon. The war became an argument of who had the biggest weapon. However, neither country fired a single missile thus making this a cold war instead of a hot war (200Years).
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a major event in U.S History that almost led to nuclear destruction. It was over a period of thirteen days in which diplomats from the U.S and the Soviet Union were trying to reach a peaceful resolution so that they wouldn’t have to engage in physical warfare. The crisis was the hallmark of the Cold War era which lasted from the 1950’s to the late 1980’s. The Cold War was a power struggle between the U.S and Soviet Union in which the two nations had a massive arms race to become the strongest military force. The U.S considered Communism to be an opposing political entity, and therefore branded them as enemies. Khrushchev’s antagonistic view of Americans also played a big role in the conflict. The Cold War tensions, coupled with a political shift in Cuba eventually lead to the military struggle known as the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Cuban Missile Crisis was the point of most tension and near collapse causing the Cold War to almost shift from a passive and underground struggle to a violent and catastrophic one.

It is located in two continents: Europe and Asia. Most people live in the Europe portion of Russia because the climate in nicer and there are more job opportunities. Russia used to be called the United Soviet Socialist Republic (U.S.S.R.) or the Soviet Union. It was once a communist country that controlled many other countries in eastern Europe and western Asia. Communist leaders paid little attention to pollution and smog so Russia is taking steps to solve these problems. Russia is the largest country in the world, made up of 6,601,665 square miles (17,098,242 sq. km.) and home to 142,423,773 people. It’s capital, Moscow holds about 13.5 million people, and at its center lies the enormous palace city Kremlin. One of these structures include the St. Basil’s Cathedral, a is a spectacular attraction that features giant brightly colored spires of different patterns, the highest of which crowned with a gold. Russia’s governmental structure is based on a system that was enacted by the 1993 constitution which declared Russia a democratic and federal based state. A multiparty system is also in effect although this is weak in the current dispensation. Laws and policies affecting citizens have to be made public and must have to be drafted in harmony with international laws and treaties. Russian is the official language. This is a stark difference with the United States, whose constitution was ratified in 1787 with a strong democratic tradition involving two major parties.
Russia contains many different trade routes and is looking to expand its trans-Siberian railway to open up even more. There are also many different boundaries, a large amount of these are in the Northwestern, Central, Southern, Volga, and lower portions of the Urals, and Siberian areas. Populated areas contain most of the sustainable structures. It also includes 26 protected sites of World Heritage. These are found in the northwest mainly, but also found throughout Russia. Capabilities in Russia are lower than most other countries as the climate and terrain pose the issue of making most of the country not ideal for saving, enhancing, or sustaining life.
Russia culture is very different from any other culture that I have ever read about. This is a country that is dominated by males. Males actually run the county of Russia. The men are so dominated that every Russian women dream is to be married and have a family with these men. Russia is known for its poor society. In the book Sakharov he mentions how he moved from one place to another. He first was in Moscow’s larger apartments with his family. In this apartment there were six families. With thin the six families they had to share the kitchen and the bathroom. Then he states that he moved into a very old house and in this old house there was a leaking ceiling. With in this house there were still six families that shared everything. (Sakharov 24-25)
