Gender as a Cultural Construction
In the David Reimer’s article, gender is portrayed as a cultural construction, but not a natural identity. Anthropologists have found out that gender identity can be nurtured rather than created out of nature (Visvanathan et al. 67). The story of David Reimer, who was converted to girl, confirms the nurturing ideologies. Back in 1965, David and his brother were born as twins. When David was eight months old, his parents advocated for reassignment of his gender identity after his original male sex identity was destroyed by doctors. David Reimer live for many years such as girl, Even later, when he underwent a double mastectomy to remove the breasts and finally became a man. He died in 2004 after committing suicide.
An analysis of anthropologists that the money has been used to change the gender identities in history as well as today. This approach has been used for bilingual widely in developed countries, such as in the treatment of children who suffer from the problems of sex anatomy.
