Summary of “Antidepressants Prevent Suicide” In 2008 Ed Edelson stated in his article “Antidepressants Prevent Suicide” that antidepressants help prevent suicidal thoughts and tendencies. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns against the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in antidepressants in case of potential risk of suicidal signs (Edelson). Treating depression with antidepressants and/or therapy has shown a reduction of suicide attempts in patients. That the benefits of using antidepressants with SSRIs and therapy to treat depression is far greater than the small risk of getting suicidal thoughts at the beginning of the process when taking a new medication. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has put a warning sign on all prescribed antidepressant medications that contain selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in the slight chance that users begin to have a side effect of suicidal thoughts. “It finds that pharmaceutical and psychotherapy treatments aimed at fighting depression, reduce those attempts” (Edelson). The study was conducted with more than 70,000 people being given an antidepressant from either their doctors or psychiatrists(Edelson). Edelson quoted from the report: "The pattern of [suicide] attempts over time was the same in all three groups: highest in the month before starting treatment, next highest in the month after starting treatment, and declining thereafter.” He goes on to suggest that “Results were unchanged after eliminating patients receiving overlapping treatment with medication and psychotherapy.” About this research, Edelson concludes that “[…] in adolescents and young adults, […] the time pattern was the same across all three
