For our project, Maddie, Payal, Shraddha, and I decided to volunteer with a group called Angel Arms located in Latrobe. Angel Arms is an organization that takes care and helps rehabilitate babies who were born addicted to drugs. At first, we assumed we would be working with their snuggler program which would have allowed us to hold and comfort these babies. However, with the opioid epidemic on the rise, a place was needed for their work to continue. Although a long way out, Angel Arms is restoring an old abandoned Victorian house to turn it a rehabilitation place for these babies. On a recent Saturday morning in May, Boy Scouts from Troop 11 in Cave Creek arrived at the Civitan Village in Phoenix to remove a decaying wood patio, which is being replaced with a cement one. In a just a few short hours, heavy cement pots were moved and the platform structure was cut-up and thrown into a large trash container where it was hauled off by the city. From June through early August, teenage volunteers spend a week at Camp Civitan in Williams helping camp staff with nearly 50 disabled campers who attend the camp for the socialization, recreation and adventure. Members of organizations, such as the Fraternal Order of Eagles, do odd jobs, run crucial errands, and make deliveries of food for our commercial kitchen. In the beginning of my senior year I was eager to expand my understanding of how it would be to work in a hospital. An opportunity arose allowing me to volunteer in the hospital at the University of Chicago. I was able to volunteer at the children's playroom, which consisted of a weekly commitment. The daily tasks I had to perform where to enlighten the spirits of children and reduce the amount of anxiety that developed within them when they approached a hospital visit. I would play games, read books, or just company the patients at their bedside. I especially love to interact with the younger patients because their laughter and innocence warms my heart up.
For my volunteer experience I chose to help assist in a program called the Sonshine Club that’s provided in one of the local city schools Kenwood Heights Elementary School. The Sonshine club has been a program that has been established for approximately seventeen years now in which at this particular school they met on Tuesdays from 3:15-4:15pm. The recent devastations of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have taken countless lives through death as well as the loss of homes and belongings. It will take some people years to rebuild their lives to a fraction of what they were before the storm. We, NHS Officers and our peers, felt that we were called upon to help the communities that lost so much. Our town has felt the impact of numerous hurricanes, like Irene and Sandy in consecutive years, but we were able to recover with the help of donations and organizations like FEMA which provided food and clothing. The Hope Outreach Center is a nonprofit organization that provides services and assistance to families in need. The center provides child care, food, clothing, schooling assistance for children, as well as emergency assistance to senior citizens. In the past and during the holiday break, I have worked the front desk answering phone calls as well as assessing people and their issues or needs that they request and trying to tend to them. My assigned case study is Provision 1. It is about a female, homeless veteran named Ms. Rogers with a history of alcoholism and PTSD. She staggers into the ER one night with a complaint of abdominal pain. It is noted that the homeless shelters are currently full. The weather is cold and rainy. The resident does not want to do a full work up on the patient as they think she just wants a warm bed for the night and food to eat. The story does not detail if the patient has any more medical history than what is listed above.
It is amazing what can be accomplished in just a few summers of hard work. Over the past four and a half years, I have volunteered at Reche Canyon Rehabilitation Center. Many lessons and morals have been taught while attending an establishment built for the health of others. During my time at Reche my days consisted of working with the activities staff; the activities staff entertained and comforted the residents in any way possible. Unfortunately, there were people in a more serious condition and I wasn’t able to aid them in a beneficial why. However, there was one task that allowed me to help those in a worse condition and it was designated was sensory. Although I volunteered with three different organizations this semester I wanted to focus this service-learning journal on Healing Hearts. We met with Julie Walls one of the coordinators of Healing Hearts, and started volunteering with them at the end of August.
While volunteering there, I was placed in a local long-term care home for the elderly. This experience was highly beneficial. Working along side, nurses, care aids and other health care professionals was my first view inside the “system”. Volunteering at the Care Home, did not necessarily make up my mind on the field of social work but solidified my desire to work in the field of human services. I learnt from this experience at the hospital how profound my compassion for others truly was. It was not until my first year of college, that I started to volunteer with an organization that I am still with today and absolutely adore volunteering with. That organization is the Vernon Women’s Transition House in Vernon BC. I started off by filling in for employees who met in weekly meetings. While on the floor, I met many women who were in a place of ‘in-between’ and safety. This experience was eye opening. After a brief stay out-of-town, I returned to Vernon and again volunteered with the transition house – this time in another program: Support to Young Parents. This is an incredible housing program where young mothers who have fled abuse (potentially without the resources or parenting skills they truly need) can live long term. The first volunteer group I am in is Big Brothers Big Sisters. Big Brothers Big Sisters is an amazing community mentor program that I was introduced to by my high school. I get to go every Thursday to Nashport Elementary and spend time with two little sisters, for an hour. When I started this volunteer group I was very nervous; I was worried about whether my littles would like me or if I could even help them. However, once I started, I realized that these little kids just needed someone to care about their day and to listen. I have two littles: one is named Bernadette and the second one is Kylie. These little girls have been through a lot in their lives, so it was very special that they felt comfortable enough to let me be their friend and listen. I did Big Brothers Big Sisters my Junior year, and I am going back to Nashport for my Senior year.
People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
I volunteered at East Parkside Nursing Home through my church 's mentoring program. At first, I was somewhat uncomfortable volunteering at a nursing home because my great-grandfather, among many others, was mistreated in a nursing home. But, as the day went on and we engaged in activities with the residents, I eventually calmed down and got into the smooth of things. We had one-on-one contact with the seniors, and we learned about their lives and families. One of the seniors was a veteran who fought in the Vietnam War and he told all of the volunteers a few short war stories. For several residents, their families rarely visited them, so they genuinely appreciated the volunteers spending time with them. Later, we made holiday cards and sang Christmas carols for the senior citizens. They seemed so elated and pleased, which made me feel so fulfilled that I could make someone 's day by doing something so
I volunteer full time for a non-profit animal rescue group called “Dogs 2nd Chance.” This organization established in 2007 has fostered and found new homes for over 500 dogs locally, up the East Coast and in the New England area. Dogs fostered in our homes are rejected family pets found abandoned on the streets, abused and left to fend for its self. We provide medical treatment, rehabilitation, and find loving homes for each rescued animal. While working with the rescue group I’ve successfully helped manage multiple events through crowdfunding, silent auctions, and community events, so far
