Introduction

Purpose:

I propose that our student led, non-profit organization, LAKSH set up a program to perform a study on a pool of school going children (ages 3-5) in a rural village named Nangal Shahidan, in Punjab, India to diagnose, treat and educate the population about childhood nutritional anemia. This program will not only diagnose this adverse disease in the chosen population and advance in treating it using the doctor’s prescribed medication, but the data gathered from this study will be beneficial for future projects on childhood nutritional anemia in similar populations. If this pilot program is successful in Nangal Shahidan, we hope to spread the program to nearby villages, and hopefully in other developing nations.

Why does Nangal Shahidan need this program?

Nangal Shahidan is a small farming village in the district of Hoshiarpur in Punjab, India. Out of its population of 1000 people, about one-fourth of the people are migrant workers from the neighboring states of Punjab. These migrant workers have established their families in small huts on the local farms on which they work as laborers. During the day, the parents work on the farms, while the children attend the nearby government public school. After the school day, children go back to their empty huts, unattended by any elders. With no elder to take care of them, to prepare food and feed them, these children are nutritionally disadvantaged. It is evident that these kids face malnutrition because of their weak, thin and short stature. However, these symptoms have also been identified in the non-migrant worker children in Nangal Shahidan. According to data published on the Punjab Health Government website, there are about 4 million malnutritioned children ...

Conclusion:

The purpose of this project is to select primary school going anemic children and treating them with Hemax medication over the course of three months. Not only will the patients will be treated for anemia, but we will also obtain data, which will indicate if level of performance of Hemax. If we see significant results, then it will be proposed that other developing countries also use this low cost blood booster, Hemax to eradicate anemia. As a team of pre-medical students, doctor in India, this project is very doable and can be completed within less than five months. Long-term effects of this project are that with the help of treatment, we would stop the shunting and various other diseases related to anemia, which will lead to healthier generations of populations.
