The Technology Trap

The term technology has more than one meaning. If you look at the world twenty years ago, technological advances were meager concepts. Today, all of these concepts are become reality. When a country depends on technology to survive, there may be a problem that could be devastating if it is not dealt with.

The children in the 1950's looked at reality the same as the children of today do, only their eyes were not seeing virtual reality. They dealt with schoolwork as well as business work with only their brains. Today our brains have aids. These brain aids are technological advances that are necessary to perform most of our daily activities.

The term cyborg is defined as part human, part machine. This is what some of our children have become. The Internet, virtual sex as well as virtual life; all of these technological advances are occupying our minds today. There are stories of people being hooked on the Internet, or that sit in front of a computer all day. This is not only considered all right, but it is considered normal. What happened to the idea that television rots your brain? What happened to your parents telling you to go out and play? That is what I remember hearing when I was growing up. Now our children are choosing to stay in and play on the computers. The Internet is a good source of information, but so is television. Why is it considered o.k. for a child to sit in front of a computer and learn, but it is considered lazy if they sit in front of a television? This is a question that I find hard to answer.

Are we stuck in a world of society? Are our entire lives on file in a computer somewhere? Are we dependent on technology for our banking, our grocery shopping, our bills, and even for our communication? What would happen if all of the technology ceased to exist? I think that it would end in disaster. There is a concept that had been researched, that deals with the idea of internal computer shutdown in the year 2000. This idea is known as,On the Year 2000 Problem.Computers work on internal clocks that run on numbers such as one through one hundred. These numbers are the last two digits in the year. For example the year 1998, the clock is running at number ninety-eight.
