First I want to say that I was a little hesitant in choosing this book. The saying that “you can’t judge a book by its cover” certainly holds true for this book. When seeing the size of the book, I thought that there was no way I would be able to read this book in ten days. The cover shows what I thought was a hot air balloon. The first connection I made with the book were from the images on the cover. I visualized images of Wizard of Oz before I even opened to the first page. As I read the book and viewed its spectacular illustrations, I became mesmerized by its story and found it hard to put the book down. I read the book in less than three nights. . While reading this book, I found myself describing what I was seeing in the pictures with my wife. She joined in to tell her part of the story. This made reading the book fun. My wife thought I was insane for actually reading it aloud to her. It turned out to be our own interactive read aloud between the two of us. This made for great practice for what I learned through class videos and experiences.

In 1939, Victor Fleming made a film version of L. Frank Baum’s novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” However, both the novel and the film focuses or touches on the same moral, it features the protagonist Dorothy who resides in Kansas the farm, along with her aunt Em and uncle Henry as well as her dog Toto. Both Baum’s novel and Fleming’s 1939 film adaptation the setting is in Kansas which is described as a small farm which Dorothy lives in which in Baum’s novel is picturized as gloomy, grey and dull. Throughout Fleming’s adaptation of Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” there are a number of differences which presents itself in a direct manner on screen as well as similarities. The variety of changes in the film’s adaptation tends to take away from the meaning of L. Frank Baum’s depiction in his novel to a certain level and extent.
The article briefly goes over The Wizard of Oz, both the film and the book, and discusses how they fit into Campbell’s hero’s journey. Emerson summarizes Campbell’s idea of the hero’s journey for the reader, then splits Dorothy’s journey into three phases. The first phase is her travels on the yellow brick road where in the film she meets the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion, and in the book Dorothy and her companions overcome natural obstacles. The second phase begins when they meet the Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City, who sets them on a trial before they can receive their respective gifts. This is my personal reflection about this book. First and foremost, I would like to say that this book is very thick and long to read. There are about nineteen chapters and 278 pages altogether. As a slow reader, it is a quite hard for me to finish reading it within time. It took me weeks to finish reading it as a whole. Furthermore, it is written in English version. My English is just in average so sometimes I need to refer to dictionary for certain words. Sometimes I use google translate and ask my friends to explain the meaning of certain terms.
...fter reading the story and watching it, I still have difficulty interrupting it. Yet, by looking at the ambiguities, gaps and strategically placed metaphors I can understand it better. Cunningham does a good job of tying these three stories together into a novel about reading a book. I would highly recommend this book to the advanced reader.
Overall I think this is a great book. I would recommend this book to others but you would have to read the first two books before this one. I would recommend this book because it has a great story line and there is never a dull moment.
...book was difficult in the fact of all the strange names and places but that teaches me that learning about the world will not be easy either. It is hard for people to drop what they are used to and be open to something totally foreign to them but that is something I need to experience in life.
The book makes me understand the importance of reading and know how weak I’m in reading comprehension. Not only is my reading speed slow, but also my thoughts after reading are immature. I haven’t fix some time to read English books before so my background knowledge and vocabulary are far from abundant.
The good points about the book were that it always left you hanging. At the end of every page it left you wondering about what will happen on the next page. It had a very good story if you like the kind of story it is.
I liked that this book told the classic fairy tale Hansel and Gretel from the witch’s point of view. I liked how the author gave insight into the witch’s past which helped to justify the witch’s actions.
I found the book to be easy, exciting reading because the story line was very realistic and easily relatable. This book flowed for me to a point when, at times, it was difficult to put down. I believe it was easily read. There was no overly difficult language. If you did have to pause in the middle of the story it was easily picked up again without rereading sections a couple times.

Ever since I was a child, I've never liked reading. Every time I was told to read, I would just sleep or do something else instead. They then arrive in the magical land of Oz. The author goes on to tell the story of Dorothy’s adventures and the struggles she has along the way. It teaches the reader the struggles in life and the challenges we may face. In The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Frank baum shows the wickedness of the world through the things that people don’t tell Dorothy, the lack of features that her friends have that she meets along the way, and the fact that everybody wants something in return if they do something for you.
