The NCAA makes around a billion dollars each year through college sports and their athletes. All college athletes work very hard to help their teams win games and sometimes sustain many injuries. Although college athletes are not paid money for playing the sports that they love to play they are still given scholarships which can be worth approximately $150,000. As revenue is gained by colleges through their sports none of the money being made is given to the athletes who make these sports happen and games be played. If athletes were paid they would be able to afford a good meal and would be able to provide support for their families. Many athletes blamed poor investments, trusting unethical financial advisors, and lavish spending habits as their reason for having money troubles therefore being paid would assist them in life. College Athletes usually do not have a good amount a money therefore they would be helped by gaining money. Making money from the sports that they play teaches college athletes how to handle their money very wisely (Washington). Gaining money would also help college athletes to afford nice clothes and many other things such as tickets to events to have fun and possibly a small apartment to live in during breaks. Critics feel that the term amateurism is only a term used in collegiate sports to show the distinguish the difference between professional and collegiate so that they don’t have to pay college athletes. College athletes are just as talented and just as exposed as professional athletes. The argument is for there to be a share in the profits for wage compensation amongst players is know as pay-for-play. College athletics is a corporate enterprise that is worth millions of dollars in revenue. It is reported that the NCAA makes $6 Billion annually. This is all from TV deals, advertisement, merchandise, and sponsorships. All this money because of the players and they don’t see any of it. How would you like to go work for a company make that company a million dollars and you not receive a dime of it? It just doesn’t sound right. Especially when you take into the fact that these players are putting their bodies at risk for their school. A college football player for example, his body takes so much punishment on the football field and injuries absolutely happen and he isn’t getting paid to put his body on the line. What happens to these kids’ scholarships if they suffer a career ending injury? If they were receiving some sort of compensation they can help pay their way forward to having an education if they can’t play a sport again because of an injury. These same athletes are also getting stuck with the medical bills when they get hurt. I am a student athlete at Nicholls State University and at first thought, I thought it would be a good idea to be able to be paid as a student-athlete.After much research however; I have come to many conclusions why the payment of athletes should not take place at the collegiate level.The payment of athletes is only for athletes at the professional level. They are experts at what they do whether it is Major League Baseball, Pro Basketball, Professional Football, or any other professional sport and they work for that franchise or company as an employee. The payment of NCAA college athletes will deteriorate the value of school to athletes, create contract disputes at both the college and professional level, kill recruiting of athletes, cause chaos over the payment of one sport versus another, and it will alter the principles set by the NCAA’s founder Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. Under Roosevelt and NCAA, athletes were put under the term of a “student-athlete” as an amateur. All student athletes who sign the NCAA papers to play college athletics agree to compete as an amateur athlete. The definition of an amateur is a person who “engages in a sport, study, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons” (Dictonary.com).
College athletes juggle busy academic and practice schedules all throughout their stressful weeks, so why shouldn't they be compensated for their time dedicated to sports?
