The Nisqually Indian people lived very basic but complex lives. For example, they always ate the same kind of meals all the time, they hunted and caught things in the same places, they used the same materials to make clothes and canoes, and they never moved from place to place. But although this may seem basic there is more to the picture than just this. They had to make their own tools, catch their own food with the tools that they made, and they had to build the canoes and homes out of the large cedar trees around them. Imagine doing all of that handy work all the time. It would be very tough. This is what makes their lives complex. As I have read the primary sources, it became clear to me that African Americans and Indians wants to be treated equally and fairly. As I read "An Indian's View of Indian Affairs" by Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, the main thing that caught my attention was "Treat all men alike. Give them the same laws." This caught my attention because he clearly talked about the way he was tired of white men having all of the authority and the chiefs who would always talk about equality or fairness, but fails to show it with their actions. Indians lived all over America, in many different environments including the flatlands, the forests, the mountains, the deserts, the prairies, on the coast, and even in the arctic. All these Environments affected the different Indians in different ways, so that different Indians evolved over time.
Alexie Sherman, a boy under an Indian Reservation that suffers from bullying since the 1st grade, who would have a hard time being around white people and even Indian boys. US Government provided him glasses, accommodation, and alimentation. Alexie chose to use the title "Indian Education" in an effort to express his internalized feelings towards the Native American education system and the way he grew up. He uses short stories separated by the different grades from first grade to twelfth grade to give an idea of what his life was like. He seemed to have grown up in a world surrounded by racism, discrimination, and bullying. This leads on to why he chose not to use the term Native American. He used the term "Indian" to generate negative connotations
The systematic racism and discrimination in America has long lasting effects that began back when Europeans first stepped foot on American soil is still visible today but only not written into the law. This racism has lead to very specific consequences on the Native people in today’s modern world, and while the racism is maybe not as obvious it is still very present. These modern Native peoples fight against the feeling of community as a Native person, and feeling entirely alone and not a part of it. The poem “The Reservation” by Susan Cloud and “The Real Indian Leans Against” by Chrystos examine the different effects and different settings of how their cultures survived but also how so much was lost for them within their own identity.
The removal of Indian tribes was one of the tragic times in America’s history. Native Americans endured hard times when immigrants came to the New World. Their land was stolen, people were treated poorly, tricked, harassed, bullied, and much more. The mistreatment was caused mostly by the white settlers, who wanted the Indians land. The Indians removal was pushed to benefit the settlers, which in turn, caused the Indians to be treated as less than a person and pushed off of their lands. MOREEE
The differences between whites and Indians are mentioned many of times throughout the book. For instance, when Junior went to the dentist to get his wisdom teeth removed the dentist gave him less novocaine just because he is a Native American, how messed up is that?? What kind of person would do that?? That dentist probably would have given a white person more just so that the pain wasn’t noticeable. Another example of the differences between whites and Indians is, when Junior goes into Geometry class and he gets his textbook for the first time, he looks on the inside cover and his mother's name is written in it. That means that the same textbook he has his mother had thirty years ago! That is just one example of how poor Indian reservations are, white schools can afford new textbooks every few years at the most. Furthermore, Junior ends up transferring schools to a school right off the reservation, Rearden, it's where all the white kids go who want futures for themselves. Most days Junior couldn't get a ride to and from school from his dad, so he would end up walking to school or he got lucky enough to hitch-hike. A huge difference between Native Americans and whites is, the amounts of deaths Indian culture as a whole endure. Junior had experienced a copious amount of deaths in his fourteen years of being alive, he attended 5 funerals in his life; His grandmother, sister, his dad's friend, his dog, and his sister’s husband. That is a lot of funerals to attend for a fourteen year old kid, and the average white person doesn't usually attend that many funerals in a lifetime. As children, students are taught from textbooks that portray Native Americans and other indigenous groups as small, uncivilized, mostly nomadic groups with ways of life that never changed or disfigured the land. Charles Mann’s account of Indian settlements’ histories and archaeological findings tell us otherwise. Mann often states in his book 1491: New Revelations of the Americas before Columbus that the indigenous groups of North and South America were far more advanced and populous than students are taught. He focuses on many different cultural groups and their innovations and histories that ultimately led to either their demise or modern day inhabitants.
The Cheyenne Indians had quite an interesting life and many different customs that even live on today. The daily life of a Cheyenne always began before the sun rose. Women and men each had their own separate duties for the day. The women would prepare the meals while the men and boys would herd up the horses back to their camp. The once great tribes of Native Americans are now all gone from the land in which their forefathers were born in. This act of ethnic-cleansing was called the Indian Removal Act. This law authorized the removal of Native Americans to move to the west of the Mississippi River in exchange for land. Although this act lead to the growth of America, the Native Americans shouldn’t have had to relocate. The Native Americans shouldn’t have relocated because they were becoming more civilized, because they were on the land first, and they were not safely transported as the government promised.

In his essay, “The Indians’ Old World,” Neal Salisbury examined a recent shift in the telling of Native American history in North America. Until recently, much of American history, as it pertains to Native Americans; either focused on the decimation of their societies or excluded them completely from the discussion (Salisbury 25). Salisbury also contends that American history did not simply begin with the arrival of Europeans. This event was an episode of a long path towards America’s development (Salisbury 25). In pre-colonial America, Native Americans were not primitive savages, rather a developing people that possessed extraordinary skill in agriculture, hunting, and building and exhibited elaborate cultural and religious structures.

The Cherokee life is full of traditions from the past and has helped them survive as long as they have in the present. Even though they don’t all live the same, or in the same place, they all still have close to the same past and traditions they live by that include marriage, daily life, government, and war.
