Even so, isolation still occurs, it could be something as simple as a kid not trying out for a group in fear of rejection or not joining a club because they are afraid of embarrassing themselves. In both cases the kid is keeping to themselves, scared that they might get hurt. The Catcher in the Rye shows real issues within its pages that are still applicable today. Everyone’s mother always told them that childhood innocence is the best thing in the world, but for Holden it is the world. When reading The Catcher in the Rye some people disdain Holden, because they think he’s cynical and immature, but really he is a representation of us all. Unlike other books, the protagonist isn’t someone you want to be friends with, it’s someone you realize you are. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger is Holden’s chronicle of running away from his boarding school and living on his own in New York City. While there, he meets interesting people that he calls phony but in reality reflect characteristics of himself and the appalling qualities of the culture he lives in. At first he’s pessimistic towards everyone and everything but by the last scene, when he’s watching his sister on a merry go round, he does a complete 180 and starts feeling better, the sun comes out from behind the clouds and it’s a new and better Holden. It’s this last scene that sets the stage for the future of Holden. He changes in a good way, now less cynical and more open minded, a better and healthier person.

The pressure created from not having friends and being able to be comfortable at a school forced him out of an education, “One of the biggest reasons I left Elkton Hills was because I was surrounded by phonies. That's all...For instance, they had this headmaster, Mr. Haas, that was the phoniest bastard I ever met in my life” (Salinger 13) not only did this force him out of the school but also onto the streets. The song “Under Pressure” by Queen perfectly fits the theme that the pressure Holden created on himself forced him to the edge of sanity. In the song, one of the reoccurring lines is “puts people on the streets” (Queen) referring to pressure. This song perfectly relates to this theme.

Holden continuously makes explicit remarks regarding the phony actions adults commit. For instance, in the beginning of the story, he talks about parent visiting days in his former school and the way his principal would always charm the richer parents and disregard the poorer parents. (Salinger 14) In addition, Holden makes many remarks regarding the phony characteristics of adults throughout the book. Ironically, while Holden looks down upon being superficial and “phony”, he subconsciously hosts this trait himself. This is shown many times throughout the story, but most particularly when he speaks of his former roommate’s cheap suitcases. The difference in wealth between him and his roommate were highlighted through the quality of their suitcases, and Holden felt uncomfortable while rooming with him because after a while, the apparent difference in class drove a large rift between them. Holden states, “…I hate it when somebody has cheap suitcases.” (108) This is incredibly ironic, because it shows that despite Holden’s catty remarks about the phoniness hosted by many adults, he is subconsciously growing to become like them, despite fervently not wanting to grow up. At the same time, the contradictory discourse of Holden’s idealistic world comes out into play as he conceives scenarios where he runs away to live away from the prying eyes of society. Though music has been around for such a long time, protest music just started to develop in the Vietnam Era, the year 1954. The war started the era of protest which, in turn, created a new form of music which incorporated a specific type of lyric that was a way of expressing protest through the song. Since music in this era was already a big thing, artists thought it would be a good idea to get their political viewpoints out there. They did it through something that affected everybody in that time and space. The artists view spread quickly through the country because of the catchy tune and the viewpoints that are listed. In the United States of America, it is a very common thing to conform to others in a group (Conformity…). Since conformity is such a common occurrence in a large group, all the artist has to do is find a couple of people in the group, group being an audience, who agree with the artist and the rest will unfold on its own. The artist will keep on performing while the word of him and his music will spread from person to person. Conformity will ultimately bring people together on the same viewpoint until eventually, there are thousands of people there with the artist to protest.
