Robert H. Clancy in his speech, “An “Un-American Bill”: A Congressman Denounces Immigration Quotas” effectively describes how the Johnson Reed Act affected immigration. Clancy’s purpose is to inform people in the racial discrimination of the immigration act in 1924. He adopts a serious tone and strong feeling in order to provide proof to the intended audience. Robert H. Clancy uses sufficient pathos with many examples throughout the text, many logos were used clearly and ethos was provided effectively. In this article Robert H. Clancy stated: “My family put 1 men and boys into the Revolutionary War, and I am sure they and their women and children did not suffer so bitterly and sacrifice until it hurt to establish the autocracy of bigotry and intolerance which exists in many quarters to-day in this country.”(pg 3 p 2)and he described how some men in the Revolutionary War risked their lives for equality and their wives and children didn’t endure the amount of pain they encountered. He claims: “They showed themselves as patriotic as the native born in offering the supreme sacrifice.”(Page 3 pg4). He also discusses how there are over 300,000 Italian speaking soldiers within the American Army. Clancy states: “Italians formed about 4 percent of the population of the United States and they formed 10 percent of the American military force.”(page3 pg 4). This is important because without those Italians within our military lines, then we wouldn’t have more of a hold onto how big our force was.
