Stigmas and stereotypes plague modern day society. Stigmas regarding race, gender, and religion are publically fought over and receive a great deal of attention; however, stereotypes concerning old age are frequently overlooked; perceived to be just a part of our normal society. Old age is an accomplishment and an individual should be proud and ought to celebrate his or her milestones. Birthday cards often undermine the value of old age, and make-up companies, magazines, and both mainstream and social media generally discount older individuals unless advertising ways to feel, act, or appear younger. Old age according to Marvin is a compilation of calendar age, physiological ability, and mental acuity. A person can be old in one category and young in another. Marvin is seventy-seven years old but mentally feels as if he is in his twenties. How can one say a person is old when they mentally and or physically feel young? Old age is relative and cannot be definitively determined. It is of common belief that people believe that the best years of a person’s life is their twenties. Nonetheless, Marvin considers the best years of a person’s life to be divided into three stages. There are the years when people are the healthiest, the most financially stable, and the happiest. He believes that each age is accompanied by its own benefits and tribulations. People need to be more optimistic and proud of their age, therefore, they can enjoy each moment of life and not focus on the past or the future. Marvin admits that now that he is somewhat “over the hill” and above the age sixty-five health has become a greater concern of his and he never knows if he will wake up in the morning with a new issue or not. But, he does not let negative thoughts about his health ruin his retirement. As the decades have passed, the life expectancy has increased rapidly. This means people are living longer lives and becoming much older than the average life expectancy. Along with living a longer life, ageism may start to appear in older adult’s everyday routines. Ageism can be seen in many places, for instance,: the grocery store, on billboards, in doctor’s offices, on commercials, etc. This seems to be a growing complication and may even hurt the feelings of some people reaching retirement age. Although some advertisements may not seem like they are trying to show any kind of bias, but in some cases they are.

By definition, my grandfather is handicapped. However, he doesn't act as though he is, and he certainly does not want to be treated in any special way.
Nelson compares and contrasts this rationality by stating that being prejudice towards the elderly is no different than being racist or sexist. By comparing ageism with racism via a birthday card example, Nelson efficiently shows that the only difference between the two is that American culture deems it okay to be ageist because of the fear of aging and death. Also, there is a great strength in this argument because Nelson provides data from a survey, which states that individuals spend a vast amount of money in order to hide any signs of aging. As I walked through the door of the funeral home, the floral arrangements blurred into a sea of vivid colors. Wiping away my tears, I headed over to the collage of photographs of my grandfather. His smile seemed to transcend the image on the pictures, and for a moment, I could almost hear his laughter and see his eyes dancing as they tended to do when he told one of his famous jokes. My eyes scanned the old photographs, searching for myself amidst the images. They came to rest on a photo of Grandpa holding me in his lap when I was probably no more than four years old. Becoming older is a natural progression of life. Late adulthood is the period of life in every individual that follows the period of his or her life after he/she turns 60 years of age. Being active, eating healthy foods and handling stress have been shown to greatly improve the quality of life for senior citizens.

The thought of aging is not void of hesitance given it produces questions deprived of answers in the absence of a crystal ball. Subsequently, aging parallels the unknown; thus, faced with uncertainty adopting a positive perspective remains elusive. Although, it’s preferred to view aging optimistically one cannot escape its negative connotations. Will I be an active agent or isolated burden remains a noteworthy unknown that enervates my optimism. Another consideration leading to my vacillating view on aging is, not knowing to what degree personal competencies and capacities will carry forward, thereby affording autonomy in the elder years. However, as research suggest, the aging process transforms healthy adults into frail ones; thus, dashing one’s hope that such traits will endure (Friis, 2010). Late adulthood should be a time in a person's life where they feel fulfilled. They can look back on their memories and be happy with the way they have lived their life. Now, too many elderly people are not satisfied and look at this stage as depressing. Most fear death of either a loved one or for themselves. This topic is interesting to me because elderly people should make the best of their last stage of life. This topic discusses about getting older, the life changes that they go through physically, emotionally, and mentally. Hello, I’m Tala Ashour and I am going to be giving a tribute speech to my role model. How many of you would like to go back in time just to be able to meet a wonderful person you’ve never got the chance to meet? A wise woman who is known as Shannon Alder once said; “Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.” I would go back in time to meet the most admirable person in my life which is my grandfather because I fell in love with him but never met him. My deceased grandfather was a caring, genuine and humble human being that wanted nothing but a happy, comfortable and acceptable life.
Aging and being old was dominated by negative characteristics and conditions such as illness, depression, and isolation for a long time (Eibach, Mock, & Courtney, 2010). At first glance the terms “success” and “aging” seem to be in conflict to each other. When asking people about aging, their answers have many facets that are also found in psychological definitions: successful aging is seen as health, maturity and personal growth, self-acceptance, happiness, generativity, coping, and acceptance of age-related limitations. In the psychological sense successful aging is also often seen as the absence of age-associated characteristics (Strawbridge, Wallhagen, & Cohen, 2002). It seems that successful aging means is not aging.
The relation between culture and age has often been the subject of discourse in recent gerontological studies. It is argued that there is an inherent relation between the two. The difference marked by age or our perception of old age, in particular, is a cultural and social construction. Consequently, the meanings and value assigned to old age are also socially constructed. This in turn leads to a reshaping of identity or what Holstein and Gubrium term as ‘self-construction’(Randall and McKim 235). However, what we need to consider is whether it is only this construct that is solely responsible for determining our response to aging. Does our environment have complete agency in shaping our attitude or is it also dependent on how we, as
