Analysis Of Laurie Penny's 'What To Do When You Re Not The Hero Anymore'

In the first paragraph of Laurie Penny’s essay “What to do when you’re not the hero anymore” she tells the reader how she recently went to see the new Star Wars movie. To her surprise a female character, Rey, fought off a bad guy as an equal. Hollywood has incredible power in how messages are portrayed in books, TV shows, and movies. It is no secret that media representation normalizes the reality of white male power. Penny explores how it is becoming more common to see a women lead in books, movies, and TV shows, rather than the stereotypical male. The authors title “What to do when you’re not the hero anymore” is directed at a group of people who aren’t the likely audience for this essay. Penny explains how since the recent movement in the media particularly white males have been raging with anger that their lead roles are being taking over. Prior to reading the essay it is common to have heard of female lead roles becoming a universal theme. While it is not so common to hear of how white men “have been expressing rage loudly and violently over the idea that they might find themselves identifying with characters who are not white men.” Penny …show more content…

She shares this news by writing “this week, when the internet learned that a black woman had been cast in a new play billed…” Penny didn’t say the actresses name which is Noma Dumezweni by the way, she only made it clear the actress is black. The message of not freaking out about how a black actress is going to play a role which has previously been played by white women is an important one and Penny is right to share that with her audience. Her essay wants people to adapt and understand that a change is happening and that it’s time to start showing actors and actresses who are underrepresented the attention they deserve.
