In “Schizophrenia” by Jim Stevens, The personification of the house adds an eerie feeling to the poem. It grabs you in from an unexpected angle and forces you to think about the poem more in depth. The repetition of “It was the house that suffered the most” at the beginning and end of the poem emphasizes on the damage done to the house; it makes you think about why the house suffered the most. The people within the house are characterized to be angry people, from the first line, “begun with slamming doors”, you can tell that the people within aren't happy. Before reading the poem “Schizophrenia” this writer assumed that it would focus on one individual diagnosis with schizophrenia, but it also focused on a house. In the poem “Schizophrenia” by Jim Stevens, the poet describes a relationship between a husband and his wife. Stevens shows how the characters differences and aggression has changed the atmosphere of the house. The poet explained that not only is the couple affected by their hostile environment, it is the house that is suffering the most from the couple’s behaviors. Stevens has the house as a representation of how a brain of a person with schizophrenia person. Through the use of the characters actions and the house, Stevens exemplifies how schizophrenia can ruin a person’s life. After
“Abandoned Farmhouse” and “Ode to Family Photographs” both capture the theme, essence of family. However, one poem highlights turbulent times and the other emphasizes flaws that add to the memory of family in a positive way. The mood of “Abandoned Farmhouse” is dark and lonesome, whereas the mood of “Ode to Family Photographs” is fatuous and nostalgic. Each poem shows evidence of a mood which contributes to the overall meaning of the poem.
The first three lines of the poem were, “Much Madness is divinest Sense- To a discerning Eye- Much sense- the starkest Madness.” These lines are saying that because she is mad or insane she is godly but, if you are trying to make sense of things then you can easily be driven to madness. That is like what happened in the story. These people lived their life normally everyday. They never expected anything to go wrong, which is why when it went wrong things were so much worse. They never had mayhem in their life so, they didn’t know how to respond. They lost all sense and, they formed a mob mentality. Their fear pushed them to do unreasonable things.
The house is similar to the mind in other ways. It houses inner demons and fears, which can be heard stalking its prey. It also contains a "basement"...
Firstly, the speaker brings up the fact that “the only two rooms in the house with the walls that reached all the way up to the ceiling and doors that opened and closed, were the bathroom and the darkroom.” Through addressing that the two rooms with the highest walls are the bathroom and darkroom, Kay is emphasizing the fact the darkroom is a private place which is why it is cut off from the rest of the house much like a bathroom. By including these details she is insinuating the fact that it is a sacred space. The bathroom is also a room that is an essential space in the house and so, by comparing the two rooms, Kay is demonstrating that the darkroom is an inherent need. To the speaker’s mother, the darkroom is more than just a hobby, it is an essential part of her life. Furthermore, by describing the darkroom in great detail Kay allows the reader to better visualize what the darkroom looks like, ultimately transforming the space into a main character of the poem. Additionally, by including the fact that the speaker’s mother “built herself a darkroom” and refers to it as her “home” she is once again reiterating the fact that photography used to be much more of an art and those who took part in the hobby put in an abundance of effort to master their
Kurt Snyder’s schizophrenia was brought on from environmental factors, as well as abnormal brain structures and chemistry. He never mentioned this in the story, however it diagnosable. During his first year of college was a stressful time for him, and this was when he experienced his first symptom. He could have saved his academic scholarship if he went to a psychiatrist sooner, and explained to them what exactly was going on. Although that is not what happened for Kurt Snyder. He kept experiencing positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. His positive symptoms were delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized thoughts. (Snyder, 2007).
The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is the story of a woman spiralling into madness whilst her physician husband refuses to acknowledge that she has a "real" problem. On the other hand The Black Cat by Edgar Alan Poe is about a man who is initially fond of cats however as the plot progresses he becomes an alcoholic making him moody and violent, which lead him to torture and kills the animals and eventually also his wife. In Edgar Allan Poe’s "The Black Cat," symbolism is used to show the narrator’s capacity for violence, madness, and guilt .The recurring theme present in both these stories is that the main protagonists claim that they suffer or have been taken over by a form of madness. In this essay I shall examine the various symbolism used by the writer's to represent madness.
There are many disorders throughout the world that affect people on a daily basis. They are life altering and life changing. They affect how a person can function on a normal level of life. This, in itself, is an interesting way of viewing the disorder, but it truly is the way that schizophrenia is viewed. The term normal is in its self a complex concept, but to understand that for the purpose of schizophrenia; normal is anything that deviates from the socially accepted way of conducting one’s self. The person affected by this disorder is drifting away from reality and, at the same time, drifting away from who they have been their whole life.

The majority of society does not recognize what schizophrenia does to an individual and to their family. Using this context, in the poem Schizophrenia, the author, Jim Stevens utilizes the literary devices of imagery, symbolism, and personification to show how schizophrenia can rip a family apart; and can even go as far as to modify the atmosphere that the family lives in.
In the film A Beautiful Mind, the protagonist gets diagnosed with the mental illness of Schizophrenia. From the beginning of the film, the protagonist John Nash appears to be a person who isolates himself from those around him. Since a child he was able to achieve incredible things. Throughout the film, we are introduced to several components of the disorder. Through John Nash’s experiences, we come to learn of his illness and how he is able to cope with it.
With more than 200,000 U.S. cases per year, schizophrenia is classified as a common human condition that affects many Americans; this condition includes symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, and disorganized behavior. Despite the fact that the people typically affected by this illness ranges from adolescents to the elderly, January “Jani” Schofield is said to be the youngest person in the United States to have been diagnosed with schizophrenia at the early age of 6 years old. Jani’s symptoms exemplify the symptoms of the typically schizophrenic.
The mansion is a superb example and symbol of clairvoyance; it allows for great insight and perspective, furthermore, it is the one constant in the book. This allows it to greatly alter the story, even though it is an inanimate object that has no feelings, no thoughts, and cannot talk, but still says the most about everyone’s personality. It is an object that conveys true human nature, it does not care who everyone is, as they are all the same to it, and all it provides is a place to see and step back from reality to reflect on people’s actions.
A Beautiful mind was directed by Ron Howard. The main character John Nash enrolls as a graduate student at Princeton University and he suffers from schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a long-term mental disorder involving faulty hallucinations and a withdrawal from reality into a fantasy and delusion. He is assigned a dorm to himself but his roommate Charles later moves in. Charles is not a real person, he’s a character created by Nash’s illness. Nash confesses and is evident in the movie that he’s better with numbers than with people. He spends all of his attendance at Princeton basically isolated from other students, his only real friend was a figment of his imagination.
