Imagine yourself sitting in your home, cooking dinner or quietly reading a book when there’s a knock on the door. You get up and answer the door and the guest comes in. As the host, you welcome your guests and little to no problems arise because they are invited and expected guests. Now, imagine again you are in your home cooking or reading, when through the window or even roughly through the door, in comes an unexpected and uninvited guest. In this second scenario, several issues, problems, and potential dangers arise. The two scenarios laid out are illustrations of immigration in the United States. The first scenario when the guests were expected and invited illustrates legal and legitimate immigration where immigrants take the proper and legal channels to be in the United States. The second scenario illustrates illegal immigration. This paper focuses on illegal immigration and discusses how illegal immigration is an expensive financial burden to the United States, and therefore instead of trying to find ways to legitimize the citizenship status of illegal immigrants, the government should have more stringent policies that discourage illegal immigration, strengthens border security, and improves the avenues required for lawful immigration. Immigration is thoroughly ingrained in the history of the United States. Many immigrants offer the U.S. knowledge, advantages, and rich, new experiences culturally, academically, in business, and in many other arenas. It is not being argued here that immigration should be stopped and that the borders should be closed off to all non-citizens. That is a disservice to the country. Illegal immigration is the issue at hand. Illegal immigration is expensive, and tax payers that are paying the price.... ... middle of paper ... ...uld be too radical of a solution but Arizona Congressman J.D. Hayworth affirms, “a majority of Americans want troops deployed on the border as a temporary measure to stop illegal crossings.” This information supports that if this measure were taken it would have the large part of U.S. citizens’ backing. Americans want the government to step in and intervene against the growing issue that is illegal immigration, so the government should take steps to do so. Although some may believe that unless something radical must be done to address the problem, a solution that can be effective is to take small steps to fix the problem by insisting the government continuously look to take action by passing laws in the legislature that can appropriately address the complex issue of illegal immigration while simultaneously respecting the history of legal and legitimate immigration.
