If I stay, an outstanding novel by Gayle Forman published in 2009, is an emotionally gripping story. The interesting part of the novel starts with Mia’s life after the accident. The readers also learn about her life before the tragedy with the help of plentiful flashbacks. She recalls her colorful and vibrant family members so vividly that they could easily step off the page and break the hearts of the readers. Furthermore, her remembrances also highlight her passion for music and romance with her boyfriend. Moreover, the readers will find the entire novel very interesting and inspiring and will also find the climax of the novel very satisfying. Mia is what we would call "an old soul", and because of this, it is so reflective and profound that it is hard not to get attached to the character. The book is narrated in first person by Mia itself, so that, as she wanders around the hospital and tries to figure out what exactly is going on, we know as much as she. However, the narration innovates in telling not only the present, but interim between various flashbacks of his past. These glimpses at what happened before the accident is what gives us her old life, her family, her friend Kim and her love for Adam. Due to her severe accident, Mia went into comma. In the entire period of her comma, her feelings about her boyfriend changed drastically. In the beginning of the story she had deep love for her boyfriend but it changed during her near the end as she had not the same feelings for her boyfriend that used to be in the beginning. This suggests that Mia is a dynamic character. Mia was confused about her relationship with Adams as she was not sure about the direction of their relationship with him. Mia intended to attend the Julliard in New York; on the other hand, Adams wanted to stay in Oregon. This created a fear for Mia and she were afraid that distance will eventually affect make them apart. At one stage, Mia decided to try another instrument instead of Cello in order to appease her parents. As her family were against her and they all loved rock music. Therefore, she also decided to follow the footsteps of her parents. But when Mia falls in love with Adam and comes close to him, he advises her not to abandon playing Cello. Kim also played an important role in convincing Mia to carry on playing Cello.
