Everybody has demons that they must face in their life time. Fortunately for some, they are able to face their demon at an early age, and never have to deal with it again. However, others live with their demons for their entire lives unable to face the demons that affect their daily life and instead learn to live with them. All the while never fully knowing what it is to be “normal”. A person’s demon could be their fear of the dark, or their constant dislike of even the idea of a tall place. For others, it could be their inability to function in large crowds or the chest tightening anxiety they get when meeting new people, or having to go to an important event. It could be the depression they were told they had after an unexpected death in the family which happened when they were only four years old. The inability to function in large crowds has left me struggling to create new friendships, and wondering what it would be like to be friends with classmates and other people my age. That chest tightening anxiety has left me over worried, stressed, and nervous to the point of shaking at the mere mention of an upcoming important event or date. Danielle Bernock said in her book “Emerging with Wings,” “Trauma is personal. It does not disappear if it is not validated. When it is ignored or invalidated the silent screams continue internally heard only by the one held captive.” Invalidation of something that affects your life the way fear and inner demons do, especially when coming from someone close to you can be painful, and often over time you force yourself to believe them to be right. They’re not; while yes for a period of time you start to feel foolish for fearing it in the first place, eventually that fear will resurface and leave you feeling that same as you did
