In the non-fiction book called Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo, a major concept portrayed is inequality. Katherine Boo explicitly discusses the struggles of people living in Annawadi, a slum in Mumbai, India. All the struggles the Annawadians face are derived from the inequality they encounter due to being in poverty. This concept is portrayed in my visual representation in various ways. First, the front cover of the “book” I created contains images of luxurious airports and hotels located near Annawadi. It also contains images of clothing worn by the wealthy people who stayed in the luxurious hotels and traveled through the luxurious airports. This was a very powerful story in Annawadi because Fatima could no longer stand living a life in poverty due to the challenges that came along with it, which resembles how a majority of Annawadians feel. The image of eraz-ex showcases how many Annawadians turn to drugs to get rid of their pain and eraz-ex is what many Annawadians use as a drug. The image of rat poison showcases how many Annawadians commit suicide using rat poison because just like Fatima, they can no longer stand living life in poverty. The images in the book I created contrast the images on the front of the book, showcasing the inequality Annawadians faced. While Mumbai is known for its luxurious hotels and airports, just behind the airport people were living in a slum struggling to survive with no aid from the government or others nearby. Lastly, on the front of the book, I included a speech that was given by Mahatma Gandhi. Although it looks like any ordinary speech, when you open the book up, I included the same speech but with highlighted phrases hidden within the speech that portray the lives of the
