Two Boys Kissing. "We were once like you, only our world wasn't like yours. You have no idea how close to death you came. A generation or two earlier, you might be here with us. The first thing I noticed when I started reading Two Boys Kissing was the narration, it doesn’t follow a traditional method. It isn’t a reliable or unreliable voice, it isn’t multiple voices. It is literally thousands. The voices are a remanent of a lost generation, people who died of aids, killed themselves or who were killed just for being themselves. The use of the pro-noun “we” by the narration instantly connects you to the story, drawing you in. Making you feel like you belong. The words are heart breaking and beautiful, you can feel the isolation. The voices wanting to belong. “Some of us wanted it so badly that we died trying. Some of us swear we died of heartbreak, not AIDS.” The story is gripping, with uplifting moments. But the narration, which almost feels like another character drags you back down.
