America’s Failing Education System Education is the most powerful weapon a person can possess. An abundance of examples could be given to further prove this statement as well. Albert Einstein used his to show the world that everything is made of atoms and that light is made up of energy called photons. Marie Curie used hers to discover radium. Martin Luther King Jr. used his to fight for equal rights for African Americans. The list could perpetually go on to describe many people who used their education to influence change in this world. However, one country’s list of influential people seems to gradually dwindle as the years go by. The reasons for this could be never ending, but the root of the problem is the education system. Education is being able to apply what you have learned to real-life situations. Education is being able to communicate intelligently and respectfully to other people. Education is being able to use your knowledge to change the world for the better. However, in most American schools, memorization is the key to pass the class. Even worse, some schools in America use the concept of “customized learning,” where the student can go at their own pace and ask questions if they need to. All of the homework and tests are on a computer. This results in students falling far behind in their class due to the concept of going at their own pace, teachers no longer have to teach, just answer questions, and cheating is unusually easy for students. Unfortunately, this is the route my own high school has taken. When we say that education is our most powerful weapon, there can be questions as to what that really means. Perhaps it could mean that this weapon that we call education could defend us from poverty. It is feasible that this weapon could protect us from gang violence.
