Sign language is perhaps one of the most complex and interesting languages out there. Sign language is not a universal language. There is Mexican Sign Language, British Sign Language, Italian Sign Language, and many, many more. In fact, there are approximately three hundred sign languages throughout the world. Each is unique to its location. For example, the sign language used in America is known as American Sign Language. American Sign Language is a fun and complicated language to learn.
In order to learn American Sign Language, often referred to as ASL, you first need to completely understand what it is. Sign language is a visual language spoken by shapes made by the hand. Many words include a motion along the hand shape. For example, to sign the word thank you, you place the fingertips of a flat hand to your chin, and then extend the hand forward. Louis Laurent Marie Clerc was born on December 26, 1785 in La Balme-les-Grottes, in southeastern France. He was born into a wealthy family that served the king, and his father was mayor of their village from 1780-1814. When Clerc was one year old he fell off a chair and hit his head hard on the floor, leaving a scar. The scar on his face later became part of his name sign, the middle and index finger would brush downward across the right cheek near the mouth. Soon later he developed a fever, and both his sense of hearing and smell were damaged. And it was never clear if the his loss of senses were from the accident or if he was born with those disabilities. His parents had tried everything to fix his hearing but nothing worked.
In American Sign Language a major part of the language entails being able to express emotions and types of questions through the use of non- manual signals such as when asking a yes-no question the eyebrows will go up but when asking a wh-question such as what the eyebrows go down. Another way to express something is through mouth morphemes this is the way your mouth is shaped to convey different meanings, such as size and grammar. Non-manual signals and mouth morphemes are just as important as any sign and enrich the language to make it possible to effectively communicate.
In our discussion of cochlear implants that, in my mind, seemed at times distastefully eugenicist, I found myself grappling with some difficult questions: How different would my experience of the world be if I communicated via American Sign Language instead of English? Does the existence of sign language benefit the world in some meaningful way? Just what, if anything, would be lost if the world lost sign language?

In the U.S. the fourth most common language is American Sign Language. American Sign Language or ASL is a way of communication for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. As common as this language is, many people know nothing about it so i decided to open myself to this challenge. I decided to dedicate myself to this topic and learn as much information on this language. I wanted to open myself up to a whole new community just like i had in learning Spanish and French. A person cannot fully "speak" the language without understanding the importance of all five aspects. You can change the meaning of a phrase completely by raising your eyebrows, repeating the sign, or enlarging the space used. You create a whole picture, the scenario as it takes place. You explain to the receiver the mood, time frame, and event all in a short amount of time. Take an airplane ride, for example: you could sign the place quickly taking off, flying steadily to its destination, and having a bumpy landing, all with one movement. In the same sense, you can describe a person, a place, or an object to the tee. Giving directions is a snap, and telling a story is marvelous.
