The American Revolution was the first world conflict that offered a new found hope for the colonists living in the United States, (Shultz,n.d.). However, this did not come without a price. There were many deaths and injuries that were war related, and disease and illness took many lives as well. The Revolution lasted for six years and took men away from their families without the knowledge if they would ever return. The colonists were promised life, liberty, and property if they could defeat the British, (Shultz,n.d.). The colonists became divided between the loyalists, rebels, and the people that remained neutral. The Revolutionaries did not want to be ruled by a few powerful people and an established church. They wanted to have the …show more content…
The British welcomed them with opened arms and promised them freedom after the war was over. During the chaos of the battlefield, many slaves ran away, hoping to find freedom for themselves in New England or Canada. Eventually, all the states except Georgia, made the importing slaves illegal. While the South had not yet abolished slavery, abolition in the North was progressing, even if it was a slow process. The Revolutionary War was detrimental to the Native Americans, (Shultz,n.d.). By this time, disease and violence had killed off most of the tribes living on the Atlantic Coast. There were still some tribes that lived between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River that were in constant contact with the colonists. The battles against the Indian tribes were violent and deadly. They were the beginning of complete removal of the Indians from their land so that the colonists could take complete control of it. The woman of the Revolutionary War were important as well, (Shultz,n.d.). They often raised funds for the war effort of the Continental Army and sometimes they would even fight alongside the men. New Jersey’s constitution acknowledged women as “free inhabitants” and they were given the right to vote for the first time, however, none of the other states did so. The men defined the role of women as more of a “Republican motherhood”, where they were expected to raise the young sons as Republicans, with a strict curriculum of education, religion, and political engagement. These women were confined to the roles inside the family unit and away from the public
The American Revolution plays a prevalent role in the development of United States history. It is fundamental to the progression of the united nation’s advancement, in emerging as an independent estate. Generally speaking, the American Revolution was essentially the war waged against Great Britain by the Colonials residing within the Thirteen Colonies. Their purpose: To break away from the motherland and authoritatively become a self-governed society parted from Great Britain. Although the Revolutionary War solitarily is a pivotal matter in the evolution of United States history, the events leading up to the revolution play a significant role in further enhancing the comprehension of American history.
During the War for American Independence, 78 men were commissioned as general officers into the Continental Army by the Continental Congress. Many of these generals commanded troops with differing levels of competence and success. George Washington is typically seen as most important general, however throughout the war a number of his subordinates were able to distinguish themselves amongst their peers. One such general was Nathanael Greene. At the end of the Revolutionary War, Greene would become Washington’s most important subordinate, as demonstrated by Edward Lengel’s assessment of Greene as “the youngest and most capable of Washington’s generals.” Washington and Greene developed a strong, positive and close relationship between themselves. Greene began his life in the military after having been raised a Quaker. With limited access to literature and knowledge in his younger years, Greene became an avid reader which equipped him with the knowledge necessary to excel as a general during the war. Through his devoted study of military operations, firsthand experience and natural abilities as a soldier, Greene became an excellent military commander. He would become known for his successful southern campaign, during which, he loosened British control of the South and helped lead the war to its climax at Yorktown. Throughout the war, he was involved in a number high profile battles where he built a reputation of being an elite strategist who also understood unconventional warfare, logistics, and the importance of military-civil affairs and had a natural political/social acumen. The thesis of this paper is that Greene’s proven reputation of being a soldier, strategist and statesman would cause him to become the second greates...
The American Revolution (1775-1783) was a war between England and the colonies which were settled earlier by the English. There were many factors and events that led to the American Revolution. The Revolution was mainly an economic rebellion that was fueled by taxation without representation following the French and Indian War. The English Parliament was more often than not considered cruel and unfair by the colonists. With conflicts over trade, taxes and government representation, the colonies were at a starting line of a revolution that would later transform into the basis of the United States of America.
The American Revolution, also known as the War for Independence began from 1785-1783. The primary cause for the war was because of a conflict between the 13 British colonies and England. The American Revolution resulted in a victory for the 13 British colonies who would declare themselves as the United States of America. However, there are many questions on whether or not the American Revolution was really revolutionary and if there were revolutionary changes being made to society. The American Revolution was not revolutionary because separation between African-Americans and Whites still existed, no change in women's representation or their voices being valued as high as men, and the Indians were promised the “Utmost Good Faith” but the result
The American Revolution, or otherwise known as the American War of Independence, was taken place between the years of 1775-1783. The war was fought between Great Britain and the 13 British North American colonies. The American Revolution caused a series of traumatic events. The American colonists were justified in waging war because the British seized the rights of the colonists, the American colonists did not have a say in Parliament, the Boston Massacre, and incoherent decisions involving taxes by the British King.
Evaluate the relative importance of three of the following as factors prompting Americans to rebel in 1776.
The American Revolution was a war in which the colonists achieved political independence from their former rulers Great Britain. It was "the formulation of new principles of the relation of men to government, and of the relation of colonies to mother country. It was the inauguration of effective self-government and of social and economic equality."1 The colonists, in effect, achieved full autonomy from Great Britain through the American Revolution. The colonists felt (for the betterment of all Americans) that it was their duty and responsibility to rise up against their oppressors to form their own government. John Adams even states, "[that] the real American Revolution was a radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments, and affections of the people. Above all, [the Revolution] was in the minds and hearts of the peopl...
The American Revolution is the most important event in the New World history. It was the process where the thirteen colonies of North America became independent of Great Britain and then formed a new unified government. The Americans fought against the British for a number of reasons, but the most important reason was economic in nature. The American Revolution was fought for different ideas that were important in those times. The economy in America was not the best, and people had to support all the orders from Great Britain because this was their home country. Therefore, the British controlled the economy of North America. Many Americans thought that the British were making injustices with the American economy and this was the main reason for the revolution.
After fighting in the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763), Britain was left with an immense debt on its shoulders (Chapter 4). It was up to George Grenville to help reduce this debt and save England from a disastrous future (Chapter 4). His plans were set into motion when parliament passed different acts that they hoped would raise money to pay off the debt (Chapter 4). However, they did not foresee that these actions would lead to the American Revolution. Although the change in British imperial policy involved taxing and placing acts on the colonists to raise debt money, these actions displeased the people and caused them to revolt creating events like the Boston Massacre and The Boston Tea Party. These factors were of many that brought about the
In history, the American Revolution is a big event as it marked the beginning of the strongest country in the world in modern times. The war occurred between the British and the colonists of Britain. Many of the things the British did to their American colonists were unjust despite the fact that they had just come out of the French and Indian War. The British taxation of the American colonists was very unjust and the colonists’ actions against the British could be justified as they were upset by the unjust tyranny of King George III.
Great Britain engaged in several wars throughout history, but by the 1700s Great Britain was in jeopardy of maintaining such a strong union of military defense. The British had no outside allies; forces prepared to push the French out of the Mississippi Valley; therefore, British, its colonies, and Native Americans had to go to war against the French alone. On May 18, 1756 British declared war known today as the “French and Indian War. The war would cost the British tremendously debt. “The successful conclusion of the Seven Year War’ the French and Indian War in the British colonies left Great Britain with a huge debt.
The American Revolution was tensions between Great Britain's 13 colonies and the colonial government. What caused the beginning of the revolutionary war? Skirmishes between the troops and colonial militiamen in Lexington and Concord was what started the armed conflict, later following the rebels striving for their independence during the summer. During about this time in 1775 Patrick Henry had delivered the famous Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death speech. The speech delivered a proposal to organize a volunteer company of cavalry or infantry in every Virginia county(Wirth). Henry addressed himself to the Convention's president, Peyton Randolph of Williamsburg. Henry's words were not written down, but no one who heard them forgot their effectiveness,
The American Revolution was caused by the unique nature of the American Colonists and their society in contrast to their relationship with the English Government and peoples. Life in America was not a life of leisure. American colonists had worked hard to cultivate their lands and develop their towns and cities. Rural life in the American colonies consisted not only of farmers, tradesmen also prospered. (Handlin. 24) By 1763, the American Colonies were spreading west. The expelling of the French and the Spaniards in 1763 opened lands of opportunity for the colonists. American colonists who settled in the new lands and the New World were a, “fresh breed of humans, self-reliant, rationalistic, disdainful of established ideas and authorities, vain, provincial, sometimes violent, often reckless”. (Handlin 130)
In conclusion, the American Revolution was very revolutionary. It was a huge milestone in American history. The war not only gave America their own independence from the most powerful country in the world, it gave the American government the basis of how it runs today and brought about many social and political changes. Although many historians see the war as a change of power from one greedy power to another, Americans wouldn’t have a democracy and citizens wouldn’t have the rights they have.
...he fact that they had no political power and were controlled by a country that was thousands of miles away from them. The American Revolution began as a conflict over political and social change, but soon developed into a dispute over personal rights and political liberty. A decade of conflicts between the British government and the Americans, starting with the Stamp Act in 1765 that eventually led to war in 1775, along with The Declaration of Independence in 1776. Americans united as one and knew that they wanted to be an independent country, have their own laws, rights, and not be colony of the Great Britain. They fought hard for their independence and people lost their lives in the process of it but in the end they succeeded. Never give up, keep fighting till the mission is accomplished just like the Americans did when they were fighting for their independence.
