Competitive Strategy and Operational Goals
Since 1924 the American Heart Association has been very successful in raising funds, sponsoring research, and spreading awareness of the causes and consequences of stroke and heart disease. In 2006 in support of their mission statement “Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke”, the AHA announced a new strategic goal of increasing their total revenue from $600 million to $1 billion in order to reduce the death rate from coronary heart disease and stroke by 25 percent by 2010. In order to achieve such a lofty goal, the AHA acknowledged the need to identify and develop a differentiated workforce that would be able to carry out the strategic intent of the organization by shifting their focus to attracting, selecting, and retaining top talent through strategic investments.
The optimal scenario of the AHA would be to have a differentiated workforce that would consist of identifying "A" players and "A" positions throughout the organization where wealth or value is created to contribute to the bottom line of generating the billion-dollar goal by 2010 and placing those players in all positions throughout the organization. However, the reality is that the best action for the AHA due to budgetary and time constraints is to make strategic investments in the workforce that will have high impact and drive desired results by putting the right people in the right places and not the right people everywhere. AHA Balanced Scorecard
With the goals of 2010 in mind, it is important for the AHA to be able to measure the actions of their employees and ensure the alignment of their behaviors with the strategic goals of the association. The Balance Score Card developed below serves as universal tool to do just that, but also sends a message to leaders and employees across the association that this is the new strategic direction the association will be moving, and this is it will be mapped and measured to ensure we reach our goals for 2010.
It is however important to note that due to high importance to spread awareness and reduce heart disease by 25% in 2010, the customer dimension of the BSC stands at the top.

Since 1960 the age-adjusted mortality rates for cardiovascular disease (CVD) has declined steadily in the U.S. due to multiple factors, but still remains one of the primary causes of morbidity and premature mortality worldwide. Greater control of risk factors and improved treatments for cardiovascular disease has significantly contributed to this decline (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). In the U.S. alone it claims approximately 830,000 each year and accounts for 1/6 of all deaths under the age of 65 (Weiss and Lonnquist, 2011). Based on the 2007 mortality rate data an average of 1 death every 37 seconds is due to cardiovascular disease (Lloyd-Jones et al., 2009). Controlling and reducing risk factors is crucial for saving lives. There are a number of contributing risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which may appear in the form of hereditary, behavioral, and psychological, all of which ultimately converge in social or cultural factors.
Balanced Scorecard The balanced scorecard (BSC) is a strategy used in organizations to determine their performance measures (Meredith & Shafer, 2016). The BSC provides knowledge into four perspectives of an organization; financial performance, customer performance, internal business process performance, and organizational learning and growth (Meredith & Shafer, 2016). There are many elements of the BSC, including the strategy map which displays the cause and effect relationships between the four perspectives to achieve a specific organizational goal (Meredith & Shafer, 2016).

In the medical field, innovations, research and technology motivate the business to perform and deliver care in a new standard. Mayo Clinic has a logo of three shields that are interlocked, presenting patient care, research and education.
BSC Success Using the balanced scorecard approach Veolia was able to implement a system designed to help translate organizational strategy into something employees could understand and use. The purpose of the scorecard is to design to boost organizational performance, break down communication barriers between business units and departments, increase focus on strategy and results, budget and prioritize time and resources more effectively, and help the company better understand and react to customer needs. Veolia started in one area of the company, first with implementing the scorecard approach and then once it was successful there moved to another department. Veolia developed a training platform so employees would understand the balance scorecard approach. The training was online and kept short.
