Alzheimer’s disease also known as senile dementia. This incurable, degenerative, terminal disease was first described by a German psychiatrist and neuropathologist Alois Alzheimer in 1906 and was named after him. Alzheimer 's disease (AD) is a slowly progressive disease of the brain that is characterized by impairment of memory and eventually by disturbances in reasoning, planning, language, and perception. It is a progressive disease that cannot really be prevented. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. It mostly occurs in individuals over the age of 65, specifically women. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than five million Americans are living with this disease, and every 67 seconds, an American develops Alzheimer 's. It is also the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S with approximately 500,000 people dying each year. Also reports that almost two thirds of Alzheimer 's patients are women. (Alzheimer 's Foundation of America, 2014; Alzheimer 's Association, 2014). Alzheimer disease is considered one of the biggest health care issues in the US and cost the nation more than 200 billion annually. With a rating of 1 in 3 seniors dies early because of Alzheimer, it 's considered one of highest death causing disease in the states. In addition to the cost of treatments and health care, millions of dollars go to researching the causes and the symptoms. Recording to the latest researches the cause of Alzheimer’s disease is amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles that occur in the brain. Both amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles are buildups of protein that also occur as part of the normal aging process, but in people with Alzheimer’s the amounts of these proteins that build up ar... ... middle of paper ... ...ck of their basic necessities to be able to cover the needs of the patient. Studied have shown that families of Alzheimer patients are more likely to suffer from hunger because of the tremendous cost associated with the Alzheimer disease. Because there is not treatment and patients need the medical supervision and treatment for their life which explain the financial impact on the family of the patient. In conclusion, Alzheimer disease is considered on the health care issues that has big impact on health care, economic and other aspects of the country. With a high death rating and tremendous national cost, more investigation and work need to be given for this issue. The need of cure became a priority and need to be given more attention. Also, I think we need more programs to offer financial and emotional help to the families of patients.
