Lord Of the Flies As A Psychological Allegory Have you ever thought about six to thirteen year olds ever acting like savages and turning into a serial killer? After reading Lord of the Flies, this is exactly what happened. Ralph, Piggy, Jack and other kids cash land on a gorgeous island with leaving no trace for the world to find them. Ralph tries to be organized and logical, but in the other hand, Jack is only interested in satisfying his pleasures. Just like in the short story, The Tortoise And The Hare, Lord of the Flies, stands for something. This novel is a psychological allegory, the island, as the mind, Ralph, the leader, as the ego, Jack, the hunter, as the id, and Piggy, an annoying little boy, as the super ego. For example Jack, walking back with his hunters, is happy because he had killed a pig, but, Ralph isn't happy because he let the signal fire when a ship had passed by them. "'There was lashing of blood,' said Jack, laughing and shuddering, 'you should have seen it! We'll go hunting everyday' Ralph spoke again, hoarsely. He had not moved. 'You let the fire out!'"(page 69-70). As seen in the quote he only does what satisfies him as he said, "we'll go hunting everyday." Technically that is what an id does, it only operates on the pleasure principle and demands immediate gratification. Now Ralph is the ego for example, he is placed as chief and he starts explaining the rule that has to be obeyed. "'And another thing. We can't have everyone talking at once. We'll have to have hands up like at school,' he held the conch before his face and glanced round the mouth, 'then I'll give Hume the conch'" (page 33). Ralph had established rules, "we'll have to have hands up like at school" which makes him the ego. If he jungle is the unconscious mind, Piggy is the super ego, Ralph is the ego and Jack is the id, then what would represent the whole mind? Since the island hold Ralph, Piggy, Jack, and the jungle, that means that the island represent the mind because the mind holds, the ego, the id, the super ego, and the unconscious mind. This book has been around for a long time, you would think it would be for a reason. Well, they have kept this book because in my opinion this shows how everyone can organize, civilized, or self centered. Just like people today around the world. So it is best to try to be like Ralph or Piggy and correct problems civilized or organized instead of fighting, just like
