Margot had no expression at all of what she had missed sept for tears falling down her sad cold face. I could see how upset Will was when he saw how upset Margot was. I was sad and had no clue what to do about this. If only I knew what had actually happened to her. “What had happened to Margot?” I happened to ask Paula. “Will had chased Margot and pushed her into a closet and he had forgot about her,” Paula explained to me.
We’ll Always Have Summer written by Jenny Han is the third book in the summer trilogy, the first being The Summer I Turned Pretty and the second It’s Not Summer Without You. As many would have guessed after reading the book titles, it’s a story about summer love, which eventually turns into a life-long love. It’s a story about a girl named Isabella Conklin, or “Belly” for short, who is caught in a very tough situation. She’s in love with two different boys, who just happen to be brothers. We’ll Always Have Summer takes place during the character’s college years and Belly is now attending the same college as one of the brothers named Jeremiah Fisher, who she has now been dating for two years now, but when she finds out he had cheated on her during one of their small breakup periods she begins to question everything. Jeremiah then asks eighteen year old Isabella to marry him and surprisingly she accepts. But as the couple struggle to get support and continue on planning the wedding, the first brother, Conrad Fisher confesses that he’s still in love with her and wants her to marry him instead. The whole book is just a huge whirlwind of emotions. In the end, the book boils down to Belly finally making her choice – will it be Jeremiah or will it be Conrad?
It was a sunny day with a sweet aroma of blooming tulips. The sunlight glittered on their faces as the breeze rattled the chestnut tree above. There was an occasional giggle as they talked, but there was also a hint of discomfort and awkwardness between them as they peeked at each other’s face and recoiled when the other looked up. When the bell rang twice, I saw them say goodbye and walk away from each other. In the darkness of the crowd, a glimmer flashed into my eyes from Hannah’s cheeks.
All of Margot’s classmates were all extremely angry and jealous of her, they treated her very poorly. This was because Margot had last seen the sun at an older age than her classmates had, she was four years old, and everyone else her age was all two years old the last time they saw it and none of them had any memory of it. When she described the sun her classmates did not like that at all so they got very mean and angry, they said she was lying and didn’t remember it. A young boy in the class said it was a lie that the sun was coming out that day, Margot said it was not a lie. Then they locked her in a closet before their teacher arrived. And this was all because they were jealous, so they
The story opens by embracing the reader with a relaxed setting, giving the anticipation for an optimistic story. “…with the fresh warmth of a full summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green (p.445).”
She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the street below a peddler was crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves. ( This description of the scenery is very happy, usually not how one sees the world after hearing devastating news of her husbands death.)
Margot goes to school with classmates that resent her. They hate her for having seen the sun, something they wanted so badly. This jealousy led to an overwhelming hatred that they were reminded of any time they saw her. Her classmates let their hatred take over and they locked her in a closet as revenge for the pain she had caused them all. But unlike Wendy and Peter from The Veldt, Margot was affected negatively from her classmateś actions.
It is still bullying. “They edged away from her, they would not look at her. She felt them go away.” In this part of the story, William (One of if not the biggest bully taking place in the story), had asked Margot what she was looking at, and she didn’t respond because she was clearly spaced out. He then asked her again with a stern tone but still, no response.
Her mother wasn’t comforting like a mother should be. Her mother was her first bully, which is heart breaking enough. The person who brought you into this world doesn’t think you’re good enough and is constantly critical. The reason why Margot doesn’t value herself and her body is because her mother sold her off and took away her innocence. Nicole Dennis-Benn writes “the joy and innocence in her daughter only infuriated her.
The story of Summer, by David Updike, is set during that idyllic time in life when responsibility is the last word on anyone's mind. And yet, as with all human affairs, responsibility is an ever-present and ever-necessary aspect to life. What happens when the protagonist, Homer, loses his awareness of a certain personal responsibility to maintain self-control? Homer's actions increasingly make him act foolishly, internally and externally. Also, how does Homer return to a sense of sanity and responsibility? To a degree, I would say that he does.
It’s always cold and raining, and the sun only comes out for two hours on one day every seven years. Margot is a schoolgirl who moved from planet Earth. She’s depressed because she misses the sun and the other children don’t seem to like her. On the day the sun comes out, the other children lock Margot in a closet so that she can’t see the sun.
Bradbury writes, "‘Hey, everyone, let’s put her in a closet before the teacher comes!’ ‘No,’ said Margot, falling back. They surged about her, caught her up and bore her, protesting, and then pleading, and then crying, back into a tunnel, a room, a closet, where they slammed and locked the door”(Bradbury, 1954). In this quote, the kids forcefully lock her up in a closet, proceeding to leave her there. This shows that the kids feel better once they get a sense of power over Margot by physically harassing her. It is significant because if they need a better sense of power over her, they must feel inferior prior to harassing her which ties in with their jealousy towards
Most kids are influenced by what their parents do and how they treat them. In “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury, the kids’ parents want them to be safe and have a good childhood. In “All Summer In a Day” by Ray Bradbury, the kids want to see the sun very desperately and they would do anything to see it because they have been waiting for a very long time. In both books they use dialogue to show and how the characters acted because they wanted something very badly. It also shows that desperately wanting something can change your life and other people’s lives for the worse or the better.
Authors use several literary elements to create short stories. They choose elements to create a plot in the story and other details. In his short story “All Summer in a Day”, Ray Bradbury tells about his character Margot who moves to Venus after living on Earth. She has seen the Sun but those living their lives on Venus have never seen the Sun because it only comes out every seven years changing the weather from constant rain to sunshine. She finds herself being the misfit of the class and having everyone be jealous of her. In this short story, “All Summer in a Day”, Bradbury uses figurative language to show the importance of the Sun in the setting and the theme of the story.
As shown above, the nonexisting sun played an immense role throughout the story. It was like the cause for the conflict and the central idea of the plot. It was also the element that caused the external conflict. The lack of sun and the constant presence of rain made this story. Overall, the setting was a major aspect in the story. As she walked into the funeral home, all Amanda could notice was tear stained faces, the costumes of black on the people, which symbolizes the somber time ahead, and how hushed everyone was being. It was the funeral of Amanda’s brother, Jacob Flowers, who had passed in a horrific car accident involving a drunk driver. The funeral home was getting to be only standing room because Jacob was acquainted with so many people, and had affected many lives in unique ways. Jacob had passed at the young age of eighteen, with so much life ahead of him. Amanda stood back and watched the events of the funeral, as they unfolded before her eyes.
