Two daughters brought up by a single, uneducated, African American woman in the Deep South during the late 1960’s to early 1970’s amid one of the nation’s largest civil rights movements to date. During this time not only was Mama struggling to control the fate of her own identity in American society, she struggled to manage the relationships she has with her children, allowing one of them to make her feel insecure.
