Everyone does not Always Play by the Rules Does the way you were brought up in your home effect the way you make choices? Or are you using your own personal judgement. In the well-crafted texts such as Ethnic Hash, Everyday Use, and Legal Alien it is shown that one’s culture can persuade a person’s view but every now and then they make their choices independently. In Patricia J. Williams personal essay “Ethnic Hash” she lets her up bringing steer her through life. “Tragic Mulatta Soufflé” (Williams 13). Patricia the author says this because she is stressed about what she should make for the next dinner party. She also gives the knowledge that she is mixed race. Also she goes back and explains the struggle she had as a diverse kid growing up in a majority white area. She was always around very two distinct cultures growing and really didn’t feel like she had a place. “And so I leave you with a recipe for the twenty first century’’ (Williams 14). The submissive sister Maggie does not think much about culture and her roots. She’s really does not get into following that type of lifestyle. “She’d probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use” (Walker 82).
