Alfred Kinsey was raised by a very Christian family with his father being a part time Methodist preacher. With his father being a part of church and being so strict with religion he was severely discouraged from any sexual contact with woman. With his sexuality being stunted and being so repressed Kinsey looked to other things to feel accepted and feel academically more superior. His father’s strict lifestyle was not the only thing that compelled Kinsey to become the man he is known to be today, it was also his early life of sickness and poverty. Kinsey was picked on by others often and made to feel small so he used academics to be more superior. Sexuality is made to be feel ashamed about still to this day, woman who sleep around because that’s how they feel sexually are referred to as whores but men are not referred to in that manner, so woman hide or even repress themselves to feel more accepted. Homosexuality and transgender are big and popular right now because it’s just now starting to be accepted into society. But for century’s people push how they truly feel deep down until they can’t handle it anymore. I don’t feel that we should betray our sexuality everyone is different, if people were more open and not ashamed then homosexuals wouldn’t feel the way they do, and transgender people would feel more comfortable, woman would be proud of their sexuality and be more open with what they want in life. Not only that but woman were still repressed back then and I think for woman to have participated and even a book published on their participation was outrageous to think about back then. Men were in control back then, woman were the housewives who dedicated their lives to home making and being the perfect wife, sex was not something woman even “needed”. Sex in regards to woman was more about reproduction and not so much satisfaction. I think it was shock for men and more conservative woman who did not participate to believe that woman would even talk about this openly. When Kinsey released his second book on woman and sexuality, people were not happy and the counterattack was so horrendous that the congress opened an investigation into his financing to figure out who was funding his programs, that’s when one of his big funders the Rockefeller foundation backed out taking a chunk of money. Alfred Kinsey was an American biologist and sexologist who founded the institute for sex research at Indiana University. Kinsey’s founded the research of human sexuality, the research dealt with male and female sexual behavior, which provoked a lot of controversy in the 1940s and 1950s. One contribution that Kinsey did is that his reports on his research contributed to the sexual revolution because his findings brought the era to a more relaxed attitude towards sexual behavior. The sexual revolution happened during the 1960’s and although I’m sure that close to none of us have heard of it, it was a huge impact on American history and is the reason why our society is the way it is now. It happened at least 55 years ago but the outcome of it can be seen in many of our cultures today; it changed the way we see, express, and think about sexuality. During the 1960’s, John F. Kennedy became president of the United States (and was also assassinated years later), there was a fight for civil rights; the sexual revolution wasn’t as quickly noticed as the other historical moments but was still just as important.
Masters and Johnson were a pioneering team in the field of human sexuality, both in the domains of research and therapy. William Howell Masters, a gynecologist, was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1915. Virginia Eshelman Johnson, a psychologist, was born in Springfield, Montana in 1925. To fully appreciate their contribution, it is necessary to see their work in historic context. In 1948, Alfred C. Kinsey and his co-workers, responding to a request by female students at Indiana University for more information on human sexual behavior, published the book Sexual Behavior in the Human Male. They followed this five years later with Sexual Behavior in the Human Female. These books began a revolution in social awareness of and public attention given to human sexuality. At the time, public morality severely restricted open discussion of sexuality as a human characteristic, and specific sexual practices, especially sexual behaviors that did not lead to procreation. Kinsey's books, which among other things reported findings on the frequency of various sexual practices including homosexuality, caused a furor. Some people felt that the study of sexual behavior would undermine the family structure and damage American society. It was in this climate - one of incipient efforts to break through the denial of human sexuality and considerable resistance to these efforts - that Masters and Johnson began their work. Their primary contribution has been to help define sexuality as a healthy human trait and the experience of great pleasure and deep intimacy during sex as socially acceptable goals. As a physician interested in the nature of sexuality and the sexual experience, William Masters wanted to conduct research that would lead to an objective understanding of these topics. In 1957, he hired Virgina Johnson as a research assistant to begin this research issue. Together they developed polygraph-like instruments that were designed to measure human sexual response. Using these tools, Masters and Johnson initiated a project that ultimately included direct laboratory observation and measurement of 700 men and women while they were having intercourse or masturbating. Based on the data collected in this study, they co-authored the book Human Sexual Response in 1966. In this book, they identify and describe four phases in the human sexual response cycle : excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. By this point in time, the generally repressive attitude toward sexuality was beginning to lift and the book found a ready audience.

In "The Psychogenesis of a Case of Homosexuality in a Woman", Freud discusses a case of a young woman brought to him by her parents for treatment as a homosexual. Although he states that Psychoanalysis is not truly a tool for curing homosexuality, but one to help those with inner conflict in one particular area or another, he attempts to study the girl to see if Psychoanalysis could be of any help to her. Once he realized that the girl had a deep rooted bitterness towards men, he called off his study of her and told her parents that if they were to seek more psychoanalysis for her it should be sought from a woman. Prior to this discovery he found a few things of interest that may have attributed to her choice of sexual object.

Is homosexuality considered a choice to have or not? Homosexuality is something someone is born with. Someone can not just choose whether they are straight, bisexual, pansexual, or homosexual. People sometimes want to be one, but they end up being the other, which is not their choice. People go through life thinking being a homosexual is considered a choice and for attention, but that isn’t at all what people do that for. The act of "coming out" is a complex political tool. Its use is open to ambiguous possibilities, ranging from subverting social order to reinforcing those power structures. Of course, it is undoubtedly an empowering act for many non-heterosexual persons to identify themselves as such. Even if the categories of "heterosexual" and "homosexual" are entirely socially constructed (as Michel Foucault argues), that does not mean that they are not real categories of thought that shape the way we live our lives. Indeed, my computer is entirely constructed, but is still undeniably real. Since many non-heterosexual people do live their lives identifying differently from heterosexual people, they may find "homosexual" (or a similar label) an accurate description of their identities and daily lives, however socially contingent that description is. That said, I do not wish to make a judgement call on whether or not someone should or should not come out. Rather, I wish to examine the complicated space represented by "the closet" and the multifarious effects that "coming out" has on the larger social structure.
Over the last couple of years, there has been many new sexual identities that have been introduced. The most common one still being homosexuality. According to Merriam-Webster, a homosexual is defined as being “sexually attracted to people of the same sex.” It has been dated back many years back in history, showing up in Ancient Japan. In the 21st century, the terms homosexual and heterosexual are by far the most used and recognized terms in society. You are admittedly categorized in one of the other based on your gender preference. However, if people were to take LGBTQ studies, they would learn that the term homosexul is actually a fairly new term. The term homosexual was not introduced until the late 1860s. Not only that, there is a notion in society now that if you have sex with another man, you are predominantly gay. However, before the 19th century, It was stated in the article “Is there a history of Sexuality” by David Halperin that sexual acts were based only on dominance and economic status. For example, Halperin 's argues that there is no history of sexuality because many of the adult males citzens would haves ex with anyone regardless of gender because they could. This goes against the current idea of sexuality because there was never a such thing before now. I believe if more people were to read about the history of sexuality, especially witin the LGBTQ dcommunity, they would become more familiar with what sexuality actually mean. I am not used to watch those types of scenes in movies; especially watching those types of scenes in a room full of strangers. Also, I felt that Kinsey was very open to seek for help from an expert in regards of his sexual difficulties with his wife; however, he was hesitant to even mention the side of his penis. I think it was interesting how Kinsey’s lock of knowledge about sex intrigue him to do researches and experiments of why sex was a topic that many people were not open to talk about. However, I think Kinsey went too far to reach his goal. Seeing Kinsey kissing with another man was an awkward moment, I did not see that coming. I think his desire to find out what people experience in their sexual encounters, was a motive why Kinsey decided to sleep with a man. I am against same sex encounters due to my religion beliefs, and watching Kinsey with another man was not a pleasant experience. Homosexuality has been the topic of constant conflict today. Homosexuality is defined as, a romantic attraction, sexual attraction or sexual behavior between members of the same sex or gender. In addition, homosexuality has been accepted more today, however, it is still frowned upon by many. Consequently, there are many challenges on the views of homosexuality. Some may think that this is an abnormal behavior, to have an attraction to the same sex. On the contrary, there are many who defend that the feelings that homosexual has, are feelings that are normal, not to mention, homosexuals believe that they were in fact born this way. Furthermore, in this essay, it will look at the challenges that are presented on this topic, and look at the conflict that is between society, homosexuals, and the church.
Sexual orientation is the preferred term used when referring to an individual's physical and or emotional attraction to the same and or opposite sex. Heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual and pansexual are all sexual orientations. An individual's gender identity and expression is distinct from their sexual orientation. Throughout life as the individual explores the world around them, they are shaped by the unique experiences and influences that are imparted upon them. All people experience life subjectively therefore there is no monolithic way of viewing or defining one’s sexual identity, however, there are particular experiences that may shape and develop specific characteristics or tendencies that a group of people may share. Andrew Sullivan addresses this very issue in his 1995 book, Virtually Normal: An Argument about Homosexuality. In the prologue, titled “What is a Homosexual?” Sullivan ponders what exactly composes a homosexual life and why certain environmental factors are fundamental and exclusive to the homosexual experience. He sees self-control/subjugation as a crucial part of all human experience, however, he considers the homosexual (more broadly, the LGBTQ) experience to be unique in that early on they learn to make sexual/emotional distinctions out of a need for survival. They learn to function within the parameter of certain social rules in order to blend and eventually this becomes a sort of second nature that is hard to break.
