In this case analysis the pros and cons of remaining with government-operated airport security, versus returning to privately owned and operated security organizations will be evaluated. Prior to 11 September 2001, when travelling by commercial airlines, bags were placed on the scale; the ticket agent simply asked you if your baggage has been in your control the entire time. Once you received your boarding pass you passed through a metal detector and then proceeded to your gate for departure. Following the events of 11 September 2001, that all changed. It is safe to say that TSA receives a passing grade given the immense with which they are charged. This is a small price to pay to ensure the safety of all while traveling. That’s the pros, now let’s discuss the cons. This level of security comes as a cost to the traveler and to the tax payer. The 2015 budget for TSA is $7.31 billion (Rausnitz, 2014). This cost to fund the TSA will be passed on to the traveler. TSA has established a “September 11th security fee” which is currently $2.50 each way for nonstop flights and $5.00 each way for flights with connections (Grant, 2014). Airfares are based in part to the cost of fuel and that of operating expenses. The major air carriers will pass the increase of cost to the traveler. Now, given this added expense, the idea of privatizing airport security has come to the forefront of the traveling public. Private companies will now be able to bid on the contact to provide this service either through a fixed price or cost plus fixed fee basis. Prior to September 11th, airport security was the responsibility of private contractor companies. Moving to a private commercial security system will, in theory, reduce the annual cost to the taxpayer to provide the service that TSA is providing now. The
