Affirmative action was created to assist minority groups against discrimination, but affirmative action does more harm than what it can do to help. Affirmative action was created with the intention of leveling the playing field so that everyone can have an equal opportunity to be hired or accepted in to a school, but it does the opposite of what it is meant to do. Affirmative action is reverse discrimination against white males, lesser qualified people are admitted into jobs and colleges, and not all people have an equal opportunity to advance.
Affirmative action should be abolished because the negatives from the program far outweigh the positives. The program is doing a lot of harm to American society instead of helping.
If two people have completed college and are trying to enter a medical school, but one is more qualified than the other, would it not be logical to choose the one who is more qualified to become a doctor? If the less qualified person were a minority, they would most likely be chosen over the better qualified white male. Which doctor would you rather have operating on you, the one who was more qualified or the one who was accepted in order to meet a quota? Just because someone happens to be a white male they are passed over so there can be "equality" at school and work. Affirmative action is allowing this to happen. Many whites are not allowed to enter a university because there needs to be a certain number of minorities enrolled in the university.

Affirmative action is without a doubt, one of the most controversial and debated political topics found throughout the entirety of the history of the United States, especially in regards to college admissions. On both sides of the argument, you have millions of Americans vitriolically defending their beliefs as to whether or not affirmative action is a positive thing that benefits the entirety of America as a whole, or rather an outdated model existing well past its expiration date. Both sides of the argument have its pro and cons, but personally, I am of the opinion that affirmative action in regards to college admissions does more harm than good for America as a whole on a social, political, and economic level, and that it at the very least needs to be modified heavily, if not abolished altogether. However, in order to first understand the arguments both supporting and decrying affirmative action, as well as the controversy behind it, we first need to delve into its history for the related context.
Affirmative action started in the 1960’s as a way to end discrimination against African American and later all minorities - including women. By migrating people of all color into workplaces and colleges/universities seemed to be the suitable solution to diversify our nation. Although blacks had been freed for a 100 years, they continually struggled with segregation. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned the segregation of all sort in the United States, however that was not enough. Congress mandated the affirmative action program as a plan of desegregation. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy made reference to this plan, but it was not until September 1965 that it was enforced by President Lyndon Johnson. The program affected federal jobs, to include federal contracting company, and universities. In order to receive federal funding, each entity had to hire and enroll minorities. Affirmative action was a good jump start to get our nation to where it is today. However, affirmative action should not be continued because it is a form of discrimination, it is more harmful than helpful, and it supplements race or gender for one’s qualification.
Affirmative action is a term used for policies that are designed to help the effects of past discrimination against minority groups in the United States of America. Here are three reasons why affirmative action needs to be abolished.
Many individuals do not know the meaning of the term “affirmative action.” In order to clearly understand the issue, one must first know the necessary terms associated with it. Affirmative action is a term given to an action or policy favoring those who tend to suffer from discrimination (i.e. African Americans, Asians, etc.). For example, certain scholarships for African Americans can be regarded as affirmative action opportunities. Another example of affirmative action could be an institutional program designed for African Americans. So why is it important? Affirmative action policies and programs are designed to insure that qualified individuals of minority groups have equal access to programs and are “to par” with other individuals of the same merit. Please note that I said qualified and of the same merit. Affirmative action does not place individuals in minority groups at an advantage. This is a common misconception by some people. Even though slavery has not been a part of America for over a century now, racial discrimination still exists in various parts of our culture. A controversial policy known as affirmative action was introduced in the 1960's to try and promote racial equality in society. Affirmative action is supposed to give minorities an equal chance in life by requiring minority employment, promotions, college acceptance, etc. At first this sounds like a perfect solution to racial discrimination, but in reality it is discrimination in reverse.
Affirmative action was set in 1961 to ensure that minorities can obtain a job based on ethnicity in hopes to make up for past discrimination and diversify the work place, giving them an equal opportunity to prosper. This eventually trickled down into the Educational system which it eventually lost its way. Many students go on dreaming and working hard in order to eventually get that highly desired admissions letter their final year of High School. But what happens when your admission letter was given to another person less qualified academically but because of their race they filled that spot needed to meet the schools quota. Affirmative action places students into schools they do not match up academically leading them to ultimately not prosper. Racial preference should not be used to meet a quota, a person hard work and character should outshine their ethnic background and should not play apart in any decision making.
Affirmative action is not ethical because it is against the law on equal opportunities. When it is supposed to help the disadvantaged, it instead suggests that people of color are inferior and therefore need special privileges in order to succeed. Affirmative action also offends the ethnic minorities on account that they are not allowed to compete head to head with the advantaged group. On the other hand, not all that is about affirmative action hurt the white. It helps remove conscious and unconscious stereotypes that affect both races. It also sets the stage for fairness when everyone regardless of color is given the chance to prove themselves. Unfortunately, this could only happen when it concerns people from ethnic minorities who have equal abilities, or rather the initiative to get qualified for the desired position.

Barbara Scott and Mary Ann Schwartz mention that “proponents of affirmative action argue that given that racism and discrimination are systemic problems, their solutions require institutional remedies such as those offered by affirmative action legislation” (298). On the other hand, you have people who do not believe in or support the idea of affirmative action. They believe in the equality of opportunity rather than the equality of results. Equality of opportunity means that everyone should have the same rights and opportunities from the beginning, and what the individual does with those rights is up to them. People that do not agree with affirmative action often argue that if it is wrong to take away rights on the basis of race or sex, then it would also be wrong to give extra rights or preference to someone on the basis of their race or sex. This reverse discrimination seems to go against the principle it was founded on.
The importance of America when it was founded was that it was a new world with new rules. People could come from all over the world and build a better life, regardless of any discriminatory factors such as race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Going farther, the rights that were not granted to people in the past could be changed because the constitution left room for improvement to build a better nation. The problem, however, with having so much immigration is there are so many different cultures and different ways of life in this single country that there will always be some form of discrimination. Affirmative action is way to prevent discriminations, both past and present. Affirmative action should stay in place.
The effort to foster an equal playing field in our education system for everyone is a noble cause, yet in reality, this cause has proven to be divisive and ineffective. To put it simply, affirmative action is an utter failure that creates far more harm than it does equality. Years of research have underlined the fact that affirmative action has done little to reverse racial inequality and has only furthered the issue by challenging the true meaning of equality for all.
History has shown countless acts of racial discrimination against African Americans in every part of life. Racism and discrimination still exist and affects most African Americans. When it comes to education and employment, African Americans faced the most discrimination. They are even less likely to get a job and are less likely to attend a University. Affirmative action is a policy that allows favoritism to those that have suffered discrimination. Affirmative action is not a solution to racism yet, a much-needed relief for African Americans. It allows them the possibility of fighting discrimination.
Colleges should not use affirmative action. This affects students lives because all these reason leave a mark on students lives which make kids feel less. Also using affirmative action keeps kids from doing their best which can affect how the student grows and prosper. The need for affirmative action was a concept noticed in 1865 during the passages of the Civil War amendments. During those years our country was still practicing in slavery and wrongful treatment of the black race. While blacks were being forced to comply to the rules of slavery, many individuals were denied their rights to food, clothing, shelter, employment, education and many other wants and/or needs. Similar acts such as these over time lead the law of affirmative action. Over the years, affirmative action plans and policies continue to merge to further in the efforts of benefiting the equality among historically disadvantaged ethnic groups as well as women. From our past to our present many people who are equally qualified and in need of jobs, services, assistance and/or necessities are denied due to their gender, race, religion, and/or ethnicity. Acts of discrimination are not just associated with employment but extend to educational opportunities, housing needs, contracting for small and large business and other public services.
