To become a gladiator, one must either be a slave, a volunteer, or forced by the emperor to fight. Many slaves who were gladiators were well-fed with a high protein diet, well trained and were attended by expert physicians. Those who were not slaves basically had to essentially become slaves, however, if they remained successful fight after fight, they could easily become rich. My fighting style would be the net-fighting style (retiarius) where I have little armor and use a net and trident. Though my opponents could kill me very easily, I have an advantage that they do not have, speed. I use my agility to my advantage, dodging every slow and lumbering strikes with ease. Though this doesn't sound like the ideal life, to some at the time is was an appealing, so much so that some free men degraded themselves so they could battle in the games. Was it for basic living?
