Several advanced African civilizations existed before the arrival of Europeans in the 15th and 16th centuries. These civilizations were wealthy and well organized. They had their own rulers and forms of government. Three examples of civilizations that existed before the arrival of the Europeans are Kush, Ghana, and Songhai. Kush thrived on its own without the help of the Europeans. The Kingdom of Kush was led by King Kastha. He used his forces to conquer the Nile Valley. The rulers also built a new capital at Meroe. The Egyptian's culture had a strong impact on Kush at first. The Egyptian gods were worshipped, the priests and kings still built pyramids, and the hieroglyphic writing was used. But over some period of time, the Kushites developed their own form of writing and the Meroe gods were worshipped instead of the Egyptian gods. After meeting the Assyrians, "the Kushites learned to make iron tools and weapons" (Ahmad, 75). With these weapons the Kushites could defend themselves. They were strong and united enough to fight. They used princes and officials chosen by the emperor to govern their lands. Ghana had a capital city, Kumbi Saleh, where about 15,000 people lived. The emperor was very wealthy. He used his wealth to build a large army. The soldiers had an advantage over the neighboring countries because they were armed with weapons. Ghana had its own court. The court was very strong and wealthy. The emperor "sits in a pavilion around which stand ten pages holding shields and gold-mounted swords" showing the riches belonging to Ghana (Al-Bakri, 80). Trade also developed in Ghana. They especially liked trading with the Berbers. Ghana was advanced enough to have taxes on everything imported or exported from their country.
