As times change, so too does the role of a citizen in American society. The current situation in America calls everyone to take on the role of an active citizen and put their best foot forward. We as a nation face many social, economic, and international conflicts. It is the common belief in America that we are to set the example for democracy. If this is true, then Ralph Nader describes our situation best, “There can be no daily democracy without daily citizenship” (DoOneThing.org). Duty-based citizenship is the biggest responsibility and privilege of a legal citizen in a democracy. To live in a country that is a democracy is a blessing and should not be taken lightly. Having a voice in a government requires action from the people with that voice. Preserving a democracy and all it entails means that it is vital for people to obey laws and pay taxes. Obeying laws is essential for a democracy because they are mainly passed to keep citizens safe. Simple things like wearing a seatbelt go a long way in setting an example for the next generation about what being a good citizen looks like. Other laws like prohibiting murder and robbery under the law are more obviously passed to keep citizens safe and keep up healthy social order. Engaged citizenship is the third form of citizenship and allows citizens to shape how they want their country to run and be viewed in a different approach than voting. This form is more informal and works duly on a volunteer basis. To participate in this form there are many opportunities that range from acting as a government watchdog to protesting and exercising your right to assemble. Different methods such as these are ways to institute real change besides voting. This form also includes bettering society from a human standpoint. Helping the less fortunate either through donations or volunteering in places such as a soup kitchen or shelter can change lives and ultimately make society stronger and more unified. The most overlooked way to participate is by choosing the products that are bought carefully and from an informed perspective as a consumer. Knowledgeable consumers determine what products stay around and voice their opinions about these products to the companies that produce them by purchasing the products that are made by a particular process or made with or without certain ingredients. Examples could include buying cereal that has no artificial preservatives or organic produce grown without pesticides. The information provided clarifies just how little students know about democracy. Without education on the subject, they are unaware as to how their government contribution is beneficial and why it is needed in the first place. The students, because of their lack of understanding, therefore choose to not take part in their government and fail to carry out their duties as a citizen. The authors provide more research that shows “the better people understand our history and system of government, the more likely they are to vote and participate in the civic life” (O’Connor and Romer 8).

In the United States, it is practically impossible to walk down most streets without coming across a homeless person. The issue of homelessness has worsened because of the number of veterans back from our most recent wars. They have resorted to homelessness as their only refuge after being unable to maintain a stable home and/or not receiving the treatments they need. But as veteran homelessness demands more attention, especially in California, various solutions are being brought to action. The “housing-first strategy” being offered to homeless veterans and those endangered of becoming homeless, has played a major part in moving California closer to having an end to veteran homelessness in 2015.
Good Citizenship is something that is valued by a country. Although not normally noticed or recognized, good citizenship can come in many forms and can be very beneficial to a specified area. Good Citizenship could mean many different things but ultimately good citizenship promotes prosperity, and increases the well-being of said region. In this country we do have government officials, but they only can do so much, and reach so far, in this country you need to focus on "...Not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" (Kennedy). This means pulling your own weight and not relying solely on these officials and their policies, to get out and try to make this country the best it can be. People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
Citizenship education has become a keystone of democratic governments such as those found in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, and the United States. Other forms of state government (autocracies, oligarchies, monarchies, theocracies, et al.) impose limitations on the rights of its citizens, so therefore the majority of their population will never need to learn what it takes to actually participate in government, and they just learn to follow the mandated laws or else face the consequences.
